It seems like most agree that the minerals magnesium, calcium, and potassium are important for good heart fiunction. Some say a ratio of 2 to 1 calcium to magnesium is the way to go.

And yet calcium deposits in arteries and valves we know are a bad thing. So should a heart patient take supplemental calcium? They say eat leafy greeen vegetables but when one is on coumadin all that vitamin K is a problem if one doesn't eat the same amount of leafy greens every day.

Do you think heart patients should take calcium supplements? If so how much?

Thanks.

Viactive

Hey Jim, sounds just about what I asked when first told about my aortic stenosis. When I asked the Dr. about my taking viactive and could that be the cause of my problem. He just smiled and said its not the same same calcium. ????? I'm not a milk drinker so I decided a few years back to take calcium supplements.

I have never seen an explanation of where and why that calcium comes from and collects only on the valve. I did have a sort of explantion of why, (the murmer is blood turbulance and causes the body to attempt to repair itself.:) :)

Thats it, thats all I know

I asked my cardiologist about calcium supplements after my surgery. She said "no problem". I guess there's no evidence that taking them contributes to deposits on valves.

If you are going to take Viactive, be aware that each chew contains 40 mcg of Vitamin K (50% min daily requirement). For those not familiar with Viactive, they are soft, flavored calcium chews.
