So much has been mentioned lately about how important it is to use the breathing machine. Mine is an Airlife....I got it out this morning and still can only get it up to 1000..out of a possible 4000...Is this normal for a 62 year old woman?....Anyone care to post their reading? Bonnie

I can't find mine to try. If I remember correctly, with my pulmonary problems and decreased capacity, I was only able to go 2000 to 2500. I could be real wrong though. I would think yours should be higher, but then again, it might vary from toy manufacturer to manufacturer?

Breathing Machines

My little breather is a DHD Healthcare model from over two years ago. As I healed I could regularly get it up to 2250 ml and a little higher. Mine only went up to 2500 ml. I can almost get it up to 2500 now. What units is your machine measuring? That would make a difference.

My incentive spriometer was made by Airlife.

The first day or so after surgery I could only get 750 to 1000 ml.

After a LOT of practice, I can regularly get 2000 ml and occassionally hit 2500 ml if I suck in my belly first and use my diaphram to pull in some extra air to fill out the bottom of my lungs (very important if your lungs are still partially collapsed).

I expect there will be some differences between people of different
frame size.

How tall are you?

How tall are you?

Hi Bonnie,

During my pre-op visit, the day before surgery, two men who were having by-pass surgery and I were shown our Incentive Spirometers.

The nurse asked each of us our height first and then set the marker where she thought we should be able to reach.

Someone asked what height had to do with it, and she said the taller you are, the more lung capacity you have.

I'm 5'8" and have never gotten it past 2500, pre-op or post op. My daughter who's the same height gets about the same result.

My husband who is 6'1" and my son who is 6'2" can get it to the top, 4000 on mine, with ease.

At our house everything's a competition!
