I'm glad you enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Outhouse duty is a fading memory for most of the country. As unpleasant (and occasionally hilarious) as that chore was, it does harken to some other things about those "unimproved" times that brought people closer together, and are worth remembering.
Sounds like you're loaded up with spyware on the PC. Computers don't get old and slow like we do. So, if it was working fine, then seems to bog down, the problem is usually infestations of parasitic programs from the web that steeal all your bandwidth. Or else a problem with your phone or provider (ISP). It should work or not work all the time.
