As long as you're taking the same amount of Vitamin K, you'll probably have the same INR - are you really able to determine the amount of K in the blueberries versus the greens?

I'm hoping that you have a meter, so you can be sure that your INR hasn't changed much.

Enjoy those stain-makers.

Hello Valvers!
The blueberries are in season and boy are they delicious! Does anyone know if I can swap blueberries for greens and expect the same INR if I eat the same amount of Vitamin K. Does it make much difference as long as the total amount of vitamin K at the end of the day/week is consistent?
Thanks for all of your help!

1/4 cup of fresh blueberries has 7mcg of vitamin K and that is considered a "low K food".

So in regards to your question to swap out some greens to enjoy the blueberries, that all depends on what you are already consuming
for greens. A simple google search will give you your answers....example: Spinach vitamin K content.
enjoy !!

Bina,
Thanks for the info! My greens intake is about 20 micrograms a day so can eat about 1/2 a cup of blueberries for a pretty even trade. I wasn't sure if a person could trade fruit for veggies to keep INR stable. Learning along the way
Appreciate your help!

The whole Vitamin K thing can be overwhelming in the early weeks or months, but I found that the only thing I needed to do was
keep an eye on the "high K" foods like spinach, kale, etc. because I tend to eat them only on occasion. My favourite broccoli is safely
enjoyed 4 times a week or sometimes I will swap it for asparagus or brussel sprouts. Daily items of no concern are Romaine lettuce,
green beans, peas, and lesser K lettuces.

Vitamin K is in so many foods and oils and that is fine, but keep in mind that big changes in your diet might affect INR, and then you
can schedule a test. You can do more damage to your INR by taking herbal supplements, don't do it unless you have checked with
your doctor and coag clinic.

Today is my broccoli day, YAY :)

Bina,
Thank you so much for advise-- I am enjoying the blueberrries big time.DELICIOUS this year! I will enjoy these little blue beauties while they last. Keeping the Vitamin K consistent but just trading one fruit/veggie for another. Will probably test next week.
Thanks again for your help!

Coffeelover:
I used to obsess over vitamin K content in foods -- even had servers peel salad cucumbers to eliminate that source of vitamin K, would avoid sushi that had a lot of nori, limited the number of pickles I ate.
Then I got a life and realized that my dosage will be adjusted to my INR. You dose your diet -- you don't diet the dose to stay at a given dosage.
I eat whatever I want -- blueberries on cereal, spinach enchiladas, shrimp with broccoli, broccoli salad, etc. My INR is relatively stable. I was sick 2 weeks ago with a virus that affected my upper GI tract. Couldn't keep anything, even water, down one day, then didn't eat much for the next several days. Was home for 2 days plus the first day (Sunday). My INR last Friday morning was 5.3, which I was expecting. I cut dosage by 1/2 for 2 days, then went back to normal dosage. And I'm eating normal again.
Just don't be afraid to eat whatever you want.

Catwomans quote is all you need too follow. If you try to micro-manage the vit K in your diet, you will miss out on a lot of good food....and drive yourself "nuts". It is a lot easier to just "dose the diet".....while keeping "binging" on any food group, under control.

I eat whatever I want, too. I have never restricted vegetables or leafy greens and even thought about counting vitamin K in foods. Test regularly, and if needed, the dose can be adjusted.

Hey Coffelover, you can eat both fruit and veggies, never give up on the veggies. And be careful on fresh fruit, like oranges, for the acid can be bad on some people. Just use common sense and eat wisely to keep healty. Good luck and hugs for today.

carolimc,
Thanks for sharing! Loving the fruit big time--the rapsberries and blueberries are so delicious this year! EAting my veggies too...

.....eat berries!

I just read an article in the AARP magazine that a study conducted at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, it was found that older women who consume at least one cup of strawberries or one-half cup of blueberries per week, delay cognitive aging by up to two and a half years! And, researchers say, berries likely provide similar benefits for men! So all the more reason to eat berries!!!

Bon appetite! :)
