Do you have to have extra blood when you have valve surgery? Was just wondering if I need to get some in reserve for me.
Thanks

Hi Randy,
I was told that I didn't need to bank blood because of technology (I think related to the heart-lung machine?) that allows your own blood to be collected and reintroduced to your body. Perhaps someone with more information can provide us both with the details on this! Kate

It may not be a bad idea, but it's not necessary. As kate pointed out, your own is recycled and given back to you, but should you need a fill up or top off later, it might be nice to have a jug of your own.

When I asked about this, the hospital told me that I'd have to have the blood collected by the red cross and then do some other paperwork to get my blood on standby at the hospital if I needed it. They also told me that normally, additional blood isn't needed.
Well, I wasn't normal!!! And , I have rare blood.
I found out later that I was on the table for about 12 hours because they couldn't get the bleeding stopped. They told me that they used something like 20 units of platelets!!?
I'd recommend banking some of your own. If you don't need it, someone else will.

Good to have at the ready

Good to have at the ready

I asked in advance and was told it was optional. I had them take a pint when I went in for pre-op testing. They ended up using it. But it's only good for about 45 days.

I was told that many people have anemia post-op. I didn't, and I think that's why.

Blood?

Blood?

Hi. Over here I have been told that blood will be on standby, just in case and I'm matched by type a couple of weeks before AVR. However this is all done by the hospital as they arrange everything here.
I'm due early new year too! with aortic root replacement at the same time.
I say better to have it on standby and not need it.

I wish you all the best and hope all goes smoothly for you.
:) :) :)

My surgeon was insulted when I mentioned it. Said he had never had to use blood for the surgery.

However, some folks have had reason to need it.

Ask your surgeon.

Best wishes,

Hi Randy

We did directed donations....a friend of ours had the same type blood and donated. Didn't need it and, unfortunately it was destroyed and not used for anyone else.....of course, we found that out later.

Red Cross has xtype and match ready, so don't be overly concerned. Tyce didn't need any and from what our surgeon said, they rarely need blood.

Did need blodd

Did need blodd

I was surprised to find out after my surgery that I did need blood. My husband had done directed donation but I still needed another unit from the hospital blood bank. Always a good idea to have it on standby in case.

Blood

I had the full sternotomy and lengthy surgery and had no idea beforehand that blood might be needed.

That is until I was getting undressed for surgery and a nurse came by with a little cooler and said that was "my blood".

Wasn't my blood, but turns out that I used about 8 units of it in surgery. Thanks donors.

I used to donate blood to the Red Cross and am kind of glad about that. In recent years, I have been rejected as a donor because of my travel to malarial countries.
