My husband's AVR surgery is on 10/22/04 at Emory hospital. The surgeon has told him that they might do a blood transfusion after the surgery. I am curious to know if there's anyone that needed blood transfusion during/after AVR.

Yep 1 unit on my AVR. Had him fill it up and change the filter while he was at it.

I replied to you on another thread but not sure if you saw it. My husband had his surgery at Emory in Atlanta. He did not require a bllod transfusion but we were also told he could need one. If you don't mind me asking who is your husbands surgeon?

I had a simple aortic valve replacement (Mosaic), without any aorta or root involvement, and not a Ross Procedure. That may have made my requirements different.

I asked if I should donate blood for myself before the surgery. My surgeon looked at me like I had lost my senses. He said, "What for? You won't need any blood." I wondered if there was a little pride in his statement, so I waited until later to ask his staff.

His people were also thrown off by the question, and assured me that they couldn't think of a time when one of their patients required blood during the operation. As he was doing over 1,000 heart operations a year, I guess they would know.

Best wishes,

I would say to plan on a unit or two, but alot of people do not require any as it is run through the bypass machine and filtered, then run back into the body. I needed whole plasma rather then whole blood on my last surgery, so yes, plan on a unit or two and if it's not needed, that's great.

Blood Letting

Blood Letting

Nothing during the AVR, but had two units of whole blood and two units of plasma during my pericardial bleed a week later. I lost about 1600 ccs that had to be drained off.

I had a Ross Procedure...no blood transfusion needed, but they told me ahead of time that I might need one. They probably tell that to all patients going into surgery just so they will know it's a possibility. I was slightly anemic after surgery and had to take an iron supplement (ferrous sulfate) for 2-3 weeks post-op, so I guess I could have used a quart while they were under the hood. :)

I donated a pint of my own blood and my sister-in-law donated a pint of hers. They went ahead and put mine back in because I was a bit anemic, but I wasn't truly in need.
