Hi it's me Bobbie (mom of Janine MVP repair).

Well, while at the cardio with Janine, they took my blood pressure because I was stressed out. It waas a b it high for me. Making it short- Janine wwanted me to get a check up so I did. Will be goiong in on Monday to get the "talk.". Had an echo too and blood work.

My question to you all is how signifigant is this CRP test? I've never had it done before and I am looking at my bloodwork now and I scored in the high risk factor. All my nunberas went up since last taken in August.

Cholesterol, total 223 ( Aug. 209)
Triglycerides 261(Aug.214)
HDL 44 (Aug.46)
VLDL Cal 52 (Aug.43)
LDL Chelestrol Calc. 127 (Aug.120)

C-Reactive Protein,Cardiac. 3.93 H mg/L
Relative risk for future Cardio Event:
Low <1.oo
Aver. 1.00-3.00
High >3.oo

I am concerned about those numbers. I also suffer from arthritis, and have hypothyroidism and a goiter ( Begnign). I am wondering if any of these things could be cobtributing to my nunber rise- of course along with the ongoing stress in mylife. Anyone know about this CRP test? And any suggestions as to what to ask the doc on Monday. Do I suggest statins?

Any help ever appreciated. I can't believe I am doing this for me now..

Blessings,
Bobbie

The c-reactive protein (CRP) that you are looking at is a chemical indicator of arterial inflammation. It has been found to be an even more reliable marker than cholesterol for atherosclerosis (that nasty disease of the arteries where plaques build up and can cause clotting and blockages). Basically, the theory is that the plaque irritates the arterial walls, and the CRP level is indicative of the inflammation level of the walls from the plaque.

The limitation of this chemical tag appears to be that c-reactive protein can rise due to other inflammations in the body as well. So while it can be a good marker for Coronary Artery Disease and heart attack risk, it can also produce a misleading positive in some cases.

In people who have CAD or angina, those who have c-reactive protein levels greater than 1.5 show at least double the risk of heart attack, and more than 25% faster progression of the disease, according to several studies.

The Pritikin diet is alleged to reduce CRP levels very quickly, even within days. Statins can reduce CRP levels up to 15%-30% over a period of months. There are cautions out on at least one professional site stating that statins may not be a top-choice treatment, due to risks associated with them.

Best wishes,

Thank you so much for your quick reply's..not that I am surprised by that!

I think I do eat pretty healthy but when I get stressed I do go for the sweets and the carbs. And as of late that's where my mouth has been.

I am going to try to cut out the sugar. I have tried in the past really hard and the number do change but not all that much. I do also exercise. So maybe it is time for some medication.

I am also scared of statins too. Any one of those I should be looking out for? It is so troubling. What is one to do? Who can we really trust?

Thanks again.

Hi it's me again. I don't now enough about these statins. Which are safe etc. I know you have to be monitored for liver problems but also heard horror stories about muscle problems in some people.

How about vitamin therapy first? B vitamins etc. I am taking fish oil caps now rec. by doc. Maybe the ole body is just that and I need the drugs. I don't know.

Any place I can look up more on the statins??

Thanks for the patience.

blessings,
bobbie

I don't think much of the statin drugs. too many side effects. i prefer more natural ways. are you on coumadin? metagenics has a natural products but if on coumadin, might not be the best for you. the high CRP could quite possibly be because of your arthritis. those with arthritis, fibromyalgia, etc will show a high CRP level. cholesterol problems are liver problems. meaning the liver is congested and can't go what nature has designed the liver to do:filter out the toxins getting out the excess cholesterol. private message me if interested in metagenics. azpam (RN)
