Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone else had a problem with blood in their urine after a couple weeks on Coumadin. I had my aortic valve replaced Sept. 14th and am otherwise feeling great. This problem of re-occuring blood in my urine is troubling and the doctors don't seem to have a grip on it yet.

Ross,

Yesterday, Tuesday, 10/5 in was 3.6. When the bleeding began last Saturday, in the ER it was only 3.0

Remember the coumadin will not cause you to bleed but if you are bleeding from another cause then you will bleed more. I think you have to rule out anything that could cause urinary tract bleeding in any person. How much blood are you talking about? Is your urine pink? red? or can you see visible clots. Are you having any pain or difficuly urinating? It could be anything from infection, stones, trauma from a foley catheter, or some underlying renal or bladder problem that was bleeding so little before that you wouldn't have noticed it. In that case, the increase in bleeding may have brought something that needed attention to the forefront so it can be handled before the problem gets too big.

Hello:

More information for you! My husband also expereinced gross hematuria, about two months post surgery, 8 months after going on coumaden. His PCP sent him directly to a urologist, who ended up doing a procedure to look into the bladder. He had to off coumaden and onto an IV for a couple of days, and of course the usual antibiotics. HE WAS AOK! tHEY FELT IT WAS A FLUKE FROM THE COUMADEN! He stopped after a couple of days, and has not once had a problem since. I have figured that if it was going to happen to anyone, it would happen to my husband. Try not to worry. - Marybeth

Have they done a culture to check for a Urinary Tract Infection?

Has he been put on an anti-biotic?

Has he seen a Urologist?

I had one incident of passing blood 1 year post op. which was tracked to an infection. It cleared up with anti-biotics. My urologist wanted to 'scope' me (I forgot the medical term) but he was going out of town. By the time he returned, it had cleared up and I 'passed' on the 'scoping procedure' :D Never had another episode.

The main thing to worry about with these symptoms is a tumor. I'd recommend a sonogram to start and then referral to a urologist who may wish to look in the bladder. You shouldn't have to go off warfarin for cystoscopy.
