Hi Everybody! On October 15, 2004 I had my second open heart surgery. My porcine Aortic valve was replaced with a mechanical valve. I now take coumadin. The operation lasted 6 hours. I also have a 70 percent blocked artery (left anterior descending) that my surgeron decided not to bypass. He said I may need a stent in the future. My question is: If I develop severe chest pains, will I have time to get to the hospital or is there a chance I might die with a heart attack? Should I have some nitroglyerin available just in case? My surgeon and cardiologist did not discuss this with me. At that particular :) time I was too doped up to ask. I am 61 years old and a diabetic. Anything you can tell me will be appreciated. Thanks, Phyllis Jean

Hi Phyllis Jean, you really need to call/see your cardio and ask those questions! You are entitled to know their perspective on the health of your heart and arteries.

So sorry you had to have another surgery. Are you feeling somewhat better now?

You may want to call and discuss this with either your cardio or PCP. No two people act the same when it come to heart attacks. My one cousin, who had a 100% blocked artery, did have time to get to emergency room. She was fortunately lucky. Talk to the doctors about what to do in any event. Just try be calm and learn about the issue. You will be fine. Just hang around here and everyone will respond. All we can do is share personal experiences. Good luck.
