I was enjoying my dinner at the wharf in Santa Cruz with my husband and teenage daughter. She looks at me and says ,"Why is your tongue black, Mommy?" Of course , I thought about horrible things like tongue yeasty icky stuff that I have heard of, and went to look at it in the mirror.
On the side of my tongue was a 1" long black and blue bruise, really ugly.
I remembered that I had slightly bit it while snacking a couple of nights before.
We had a good laugh about it, and the joys of coumadin just keep on coming!

Gail, is your tonque sore? I have what they call a geographic tonque. It looks like a road map. My youngest daughter has the same thing. It's a strange looking sight!

Gail - Please be sure to have your INR checked pronto. It could be other things, but this is a symptom of a very high INR, and you could be in danger. Chris.

Thanks for your concern, Chris.
I did test that week and my INR was in range at that time (3 days after discovering the bruise).
In the future I will check it that day.

Inr

Inr

Just read the posts and now I think I should be worried. I am a mass of bruises on my arm and hands. Been doing some housework and must be hitting myself or something. Everyone is asking me what I did. My INR was 2.7 - 2 weeks ago and could this be that it is now to thin? I have been taking Vioxx and I know could affect the blood. I am going to call the coumadin clinic and see if I should get retested. I look like I was in a fight with the bruising all over.

Yes, your INR could be too high. The Vioxx could be the culprit but it does not usually increase the INR by much. I have never had an insurance refuse to pay for an INR test and I can't imagine that they would for someone who had an unusual amount of bruising.

Thanks Al, I guess I just needed someone to tell me that. I just wish I could have gotten the home tester and this wouldn't be such a problem with phone calls etc. Going to call BCBS myself and see what I can do.

Last week I neglected to immediately pick up a piece of ice that shooted out from the ice dispenser and promptly forgot about it. A few minutes later I was hurrying and carrying a watermelon across the kitchen and wouldn't you know it, slipped on the wet spot. It was like a cartoon. The watermelon went flying up in the air and I was laying totally on my back on the ceramic tile floor. Well, what goes up comes down and the watermelon landed on my knee and bounced on down to my ankles. It smashed on the floor into a multitude of pieces. My left leg is still bruised from knee to ankle and the right leg isn't much better. My last INR was a little high but still OK.

I only knocked my head a little but that was more my concern. Its been a week and a half and so far so good. I know sometimes slow bleeds in the head may take two or sometimes more weeks to show symptoms. My husband said I look abused.

Gail, after reading your post I am very glad I didn't also bite my tongue.

Betty - I'm so glad you didn't get really hurt.

Which allows me to giggle a bit thinking about you with watermelon dripping all over you; that's what you get for eating healthy! Bet the air turned blue while you tried to clean all that sticky stuff up.

Hope your bruising goes away right quick.

There was an article in out paper about a woman who had a black tongue. It turned out that she had a silver filling opposite a gold filling and it set up an electrical current that was causing bruising in her tongue. It went away when they changed one filling.

Betty, also glad you are doing ok.
The bruising is a bit unnerving whenever I hit something hard.
Just lately, I picked up my dog because she was in my planter and stomping down the plants and she flung her head back and hit me just under my eyebrow. Well, it turned into a major shiner!! My husband said that people would think he beat me, poor guy. I tried to cover with make up but had no shadow the color of that huge bruise!
I am trying to lower my inr down from around 3.5 to just 3.0 and see if it makes any difference at all.

Maybe Gail's dog can share the blame

Maybe Gail's dog can share the blame

You know, Gail, when everyone's inr starts to go bad at the same time, as it sometimes does, we blame Rain's dog for digging in the flower garden; sounds to me like maybe your dog in the planter is going to come into his/her share of abuse, too. I like the sound of that - "Rain's and Gail's dogs digging in the flowers."

Georgia,
My dear fox terrier would just look at me and wag her tail if I said to her, "It's all your fault, these bruises, you rascal". Actually, she normally never digs in planters or beds and my garden looks pretty good right now.
She was after a rat or mouse in our wood pile, behind that planter so there you go, she was doing what she was bred to do, the scamp.
I now have a huge bruise on the inside of my knee, how did that happen? I haven't a clue....
