Al, or anyone,
Is there any info on the effects of Black Cohosh on warfarin?

I did google Black Cohosh, got many hits, but nothing definitive came up on them as far as a concrete answer. I don't believe WebMD was even one of the hits though, kid of funny.

Ross, one needs to escape from the world somehow.

I'm not taking the cohosh, was just talking about it with a friend who is for her menopause. Not there yet myself, just preparing because I won't go for the estrogen replacement therapy.

I did a check on the drug digest site and didn't find anything. Here is a LINK that will show you what came back.

Just curious, what is the Black Cohosh being used for?

Licking psychodelic toads produces the same results. ;)

From Taro's lists:

Based on what is known about
the action of this herb, it
would not be expected to
interact with warfarin.
However, you should always
talk with your doctor,
pharmacist and other healthcare
providers before you start
taking Black Cohosh.

Karlynn,

I also decided not to go the HRT route, a decision I have never regretted (except occasionally when my bedclothes are soaked :D ). I have been taking soy products to help with the symptoms and they work great (didn't affect INR either but everyone's different so check).

Black Cohosh (A.K.A. Actaea racemosa, squawroot, black snake root, bugbane, Remifemin, terpene glycoside) can have side effects. If it's a strong enough dosage to help with perimenopausal symptoms, or mixed with a variety of other nutraceuticals. it's strong enough to be cautious with.

Things noted in researching this:
- It has vasodilatory and antispasmodic effects
- It stimulates the central nervous system
- Potential side effects include photosensitization and dermatitis
- it appears to works by causing the endometrium to produce estrogen
- concerns (unproven) it may cause endometrial cancer (progesterone is sometimes suggested to avoid this)
- it has been tied (unproven) to cases of liver toxicity
- normal dose is one to two grams of powdered root daily, or its equivalent
- high doses (5 grams) can cause vomiting, headache, dizziness, limb pains, and lowered blood pressure.

So, take it if you wish to, but be sure of what's in the brand you're taking (sometimes other things are mixed in, such as Dong Quai), and watch for any side effects from it.

Another herb, Dong Quai, often prescribed for menopausal women, contains coumarin derivatives. It is an anticoagulant, and will increase bleeding tendencies. It should definitely not be used with warfarin/Coumadin.

Best wishes,

Perry - it's for the 'women things'. You probably don't want to know.

Well, I don't know Ann. Ignorance may not be bliss in this instance. Perry said in Debora's thread that he probably should have a pregnancy test since he's not had "a monthly cycle" in 36 years! :D :D :D

Ann,
I'm pretesting cows via my avatar to see if I want one of their valves. When I find a pig doing some extreme cardiovascular exercise, I will make it my avatar and see how it does.
This is my research method for valve selection! :D :D :D

Could be a new scientific break-through. (You crack me up!)

I've never seen any problem with black cohosh. Maybe a dozen people have told me that they were taking it.

there is a previous thread on this very subject. Started by Sunshine Susan in Sept, 2003. You might want to look it up. Just to go search up there (see it above) and type in cohosh - it will come up.

This is something that might fit here:

Your link "fits" exactly! :D :D :D
