My mom went in to surgery this morning (Monday) around 7 am. We did not know the extent of what was going to be done prior to that time. The least that would be done was MVR and the most would be MVR, AVR, TVR and double bypass. We were told the surgery would last about 5 hours but it turned into closer to 7 and I was thinking that meant that more was done rather than less.

When we finally were able to meet with the doctor after the surgery we were thrilled to hear that he only had to replace the mitral valve. He replaced it with a St. Jude's Mechanical. He said that the other valves in question were in very good shape with only a trivial amount of leakage and he did not anticipate that they would ever need further surgery. Dr. Glower was also able to do the MVR using port access.

Everything went well during surgery according to the doc and he said she should be his star patient. He did indicate that the two arteries in question did have more blockage than he would like to see but nothing close to warranting bypass. He said that she should be able to avoid a future bypass by following a good diet and exercise program but that he could not rule out the possibility of having to do one sometime in the next 20 years.

She was still out of it when I left the hospital but I will see her tomorrow when she will be a little more alert.

I do have a question for those of you that have been through this. How can we best help her and dad during her recovery?

Thanks,

Jon

Hi Jon,

Thanks so much for the update! And YAY your mom only needed ONE valve replacement that was able to be done through a port entry. Hopefully, she will come through recovery with flying colors! Having just been through this surgery last week, and still going through recovery, I think the most important things for me were having people "be" there without being demanding of attention or really anything from me. Flowers, of course, are always great!! :) Everyone's recovery is so different, however, that it is hard to say what your mom's unique needs will be.

Also, I know that hearing people say "you look great" helped me feel great (maybe even better than I should have?).

Thanks again for the update!
Melissa

Hi Jon-

I am just thrilled with your report and that your mom was able to have the Heart Port procedure. She'll be feeling pretty well in a couple of days. Tell her a BIG congratulations from me.

Your mom will be very tired and sore for several weeks. Some people experience some depression after surgery. It's unfortunately quite a normal thing and does pass. But crankiness should be expected. She also might not have a good appetite. People say that things taste like cardboard. It does go away after a while. Sleeplessness are also common and she might be more comfortable sitting up in a recliner, but because of the Heart Port procedure, she might not have all of the discomfort that the sternies have. It's a whole other scenario.

Your dad will no doubt be emotionally and physically tired. As a spouse, that's how I felt. It would be nice if you could urge him to take some naps, while you stand watch over your mom. Just let your mom do what she feels like doing, napping, taking little walks, whatever. She'll recover nicely, and will be ahead of the game because she was able to have that procedure.

Best wishes to you and your mom and dad and the rest of the family.

I'm very happy to hear the news. Nothing more need be added here, Melissa and Nancy pretty well covered it. :)

Thank you for the update. She should be in a private room late tomorrow. Just be there to help her with simple needs..Like ..get her up and walking the Cardiac floor. One time..and maybe another time later...Help with her food. ect. Don't worry if she does not want to eat....Make her get up and walk.. Then when you take her home..make sure her meds are organized in a pill box. Will be taking many for a week or two..Someone needs to stay with her 24 hours a day..help with bathroom, ect.. And make her take pain meds..:D :D Tell Dad..to screen all phone calls, visitors, ect. She will need her naps, ect. After about a week..she should be able to go outside for a walk, ect...and then it will be great.:) Bonnie

Jon - Please tell Betty congrats. We all love it when everythings turns out well. My advice is to show up often, and keep her company or team with other family members. She will appreciate your concern, but needs rest, so play it by ear.

I visited my mom briefly today and she was awake but very tired and sore. Breathing didn't seem to be her favorite activity at the time. They moved her out of ICU this morning and had her walk a little. The doc said she was probably already a day ahead of schedule. I have to head back home tonight so I won't see her in person until next weekend but I will talk to her or dad daily and I will still post updates of her progress.

Jon

Thanks again Jon. If your dad needs any sort of help does he have a way of getting any while your away?

Tell mom I said to knock it off. We want her home Friday not Cardioverting. Don't tell her that unless she's up to some joking. She may not take it as a joke.

Tell her we all love her and are keeping her close in thought and prayer. :)

Hi, Jon and Chris. Very thoughtful of both of you to keep us posted. I've been away for a while so the news was a little unexpected. Give your mom my regards. We've always enjoyed her posts. I know that she's disappointed she can't do kitchen detail in the waiting room anymore. :) (She'll get it).

Paul
