What are opinions on the best home testing monitor for the money??? The doctor gave me a prescrpition and a letter stating to allow me one... Now looking on a few sites I see the letters they have for you to print out.. I'm hoping I can use what the doctor gave me or am I going to have her fill out the forms from the sites??? Before I call just thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone knew and of course opinions on what you think is the best machine.....

Well you only have 3 choices. Protime by ITC, Coaguchek by Roche or INRatio by Hemosense.

My personal pick is the INRatio. No, I don't get paid to promote it, it's just what I like the best. Coaguchek is what you'll find in your Doctors office, so if you want to go that route, it's an option.

It's really a matter of your preferences. They are all good meters.

Thanks Ross, what about my letters?? Do you think what the doctor printed out work???????

I second Ross' statement, "It's really a matter of your preferences. They are all good meters."
We've been using CoaguChek XS for over 2 years and been really, really happy with it :D. Have not tried InRatio but many members seem to be equally happy with InRatio :). I hear they recently came out with a new model, InRatio 2.

I have been using the INRatio for about 3 years and I love it. I have seen pictures of the INRatio2 and it looks very nice - smaller and faster. However, I am sure the CoaguChek XS is good also based on the comments here. I would probably choose the INRatio2 if I were buying today because it is the smallest one out there right now.

We have had all three.....the protime, coaguchek and now the INRatio....by far the INRatio has been the very best. You won't go wrong with it or with the Coaguchek. We had that until they recalled their test strips. Our cardio's office has the INRatio....they also had the Coaguchek and switched.

Hope it helps.

The only one I wouldn't want to get right now (unless it was the only one offered) would be the ProTime. That was my first monitor - I was thrilled to have it to home test, but the INRatio is so much easier to run a test on - and the strips don't have to be refrigerated. I don't have experience with the Coaguchek XS.

Evelyn's experience -- and that of others with CoaguChek testers -- is why I chose the INRatio.

Also, because QAS offered $1,000 off on the INRatio (or ProTime 3) if you paid cash upfront, which I did. I could not get a discount on the CoaguChek.

Aetna reimbursed me $981 for the $1600something that I spent for the INRatio, test strips and wall charger. Had I gone through insurance, it would have taken longer to get the machine plus I would have had to pay more. Aetna says the co-pay is 20%, but that's 20% of what it deems is customary, or some such term. It translated to about 60%. But that was 60% I was ultimately reimbursed for. Otherwise, I would have been $900-$1,000 out of my own pocket by my guesstimate after insurance reimbursed me.

When I got my ProTime 3, my insurance carrier at that time covered DME at 100%. (SIGH)

Thanks everyone... I just ordered the inratio2, I should have it Thursday!!! I can't wait!!!:D

You will LOVE it!

Anytime I meet someone on warfarin, I ask if it's a long-term situation and then tell them about home-testing (as well as this forum). Most people are content to continue going to the lab or doctor's office. Oh, well.

As you can see I don't have much experience with home testing. (6 weeks, 6 test)

But will pass on what the trainer that delivered my Inrato2 told me. She said, had I picked CoaguChek, the training session would been over twice as long. She was at our house for about 20 minutes and most that was spent visiting. ;)

So sounds like you picked the most user friendly model.:)

The trainer said she used a CoaguChek in her job and did around 25 INR's a day. She had been using her meter for 7 years.

You will like home testing. I still kick myself for not starting home testing many years ago. Wife wanted to right after my AVR but I wasn't interested.
Sure been handy back then for we traveled for several years in a motorhome.

Carole, you will LOVE the INRatio2! I've had mine for about 7 weeks now and it's the best! It's very fast, user-friendly and quite small. I'm excited for you!

She may have been referring to the old model.
The NEW Coaguchek XS has built in quality controls in the monitor and also in the test strip.
Training is only a few minutes. Both machines are equally user friendly.
