Best laid plans ? flexibility is good

They say flexibility is good. And, you know, they?re right. Sometimes, changing plans and ?going with the flow? can be just as rewarding (if not more so) as carrying out the plans you?ve made?. At least, that?s what I?m counting on right now?.

Since the COBRA issue (through my former employer) had not been resolved and the rental company, despite having the reservations for a couple weeks, ended up having only a Chevrolet Suburban (among a couple other cars I wasn?t interested in driving for just over a week) for me, I changed the dates of my road trip. Not too big of a deal ? and, it may turn out better than I expected. Course, since our internet went down Tuesday night through last night, I couldn?t even use Mom and Dad?s computer to post about it until tonight (Thursday)?arg.

So, how about you ? what plans that you have made have had to change due to circumstances beyond your control? Has what transpired been better than what you had planned ? or worse?

Just curious?..

Well, I had a trip to Hawaii planned in 1994 and had to postpone due to OHS. Went in 1995 and we took my mom with us to celebrate her 70th birthday. In retrospect we realized she was in the early stages of Alzheimer's although we didn't know the symptoms at the time.

We had a blast and it was the last time she was able to travel. I would say the postponement worked out very well.

As the quote goes, "The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray..."

I'd promised myself six years ago when I started teaching that I would begin my Master's program at 30, but then MI valve repair blew those plans:eek: ...and then up until April 11 I was planning on visiting Greece in August with my world history teacher friend, and we all know what happened there, too.

My thinking is, you can plan all you want for things, but God always has another plan for you. I say this because, and this probably sounds stupid, I really, really thought I was going to have valve surgery last year ('05), but then if I'd had the surgery then, my mom wouldn't have been able to go to her 50th high school reunion (she was planning on taking care of me post-op). I know she really wanted to go, she went to a small school in the Midwest and was looking forward to seeing friends she hadn't seen in about 10 years. It turned out my valve looked as awesome as could be on the TEE, and I had the surgery this year. It was almost as if my mom was supposed to fulfill her plan, and my valve held out until this spring.

I also thought things in my life would work out better (got some personal stuff going on for another thread), but as much as one hopes things work out, they don't always. And then you have to plan for the what's-next.

Cort--When are you coming out to Southern California?

Hi Cort! I always feel like things happen for a reason..and I would bet your changing your plans will work out just great. I was going to take my kids to the Omaha zoo over spring break-and then a blizzard was forcast for the exact same time. We ended up going to The Mall of America in Minneapolis(would you believe warmer, better weather there:rolleyes: ) We had the best time! We still want to go to that zoo-but we still had a terrific time! Keep us posted on your trip:) Deb

The thing that immediately

The thing that immediately

came to mind in my case: When we got married a year ago Sunday (it has been a year - and they said it wouldn't last - hee) - anyway, we were looking into staying at a stodgy old motel - one that would allow pets as bed and breakfasts do not (most of them) and found out that the only motel in Leadville that allowed pets no longer allowed them!

So, I started looking on the internet for another place to stay on our honeymoon. Needless to say we ended up staying in the most adorable little Victorian house in Leadville - I told everyone I think our parents on the "other side" had something to do with all of that. We consider it our honeymoon cottage - it was perfect.

Yes, EVERYTHING happens for a reason and sometimes you might think it was bad that your plans were cancelled, but later on you will see that there was a reason.

Well, while I think the "everything happens for a reason" bit is hooey (not trying to pick a fight here, just my personal opinion), my entire life has been about changed plans. To lean on another cliche, I think its called "going with the flow."

The list of changed plans is endless, but this I do believe - my life has been enriched multiple times over by taking the unplanned opportunity in front of me, rather than the opportunity for which I had planned.

My husbands favorite expression is TO GO WITH THE FLOW. I like everything to go as planned and I plan every little detail of my life almost, so of course I have lots of disappointments. I guess my biggest disappointment was 9 years ago and we had already paid towards a cruise and our Heat Pump went out(yes its out again) and we had to cancel our cruise because we couldn't afford both. We ended up renting a cabin in the mountains and it was a perfect trip. We are going back next month for our 39th anniversary.

Well the thing that comes to mind for me is my surgery date. Was all ready to plan it for November when my Card asked me to wait till Jan or Feb. I said okay with not much of fight because I felt there must be a reason I am to wait. So don't know the outcome of mine for now, just have to wait and see and may never know why.

I guess I have a real NEED

I guess I have a real NEED

to believe that everything happens for a reason. I need to know that there is order and purpose in the universe, otherwise, I would really flip out.

Another thing I thought of - the waiting for the referral for a child from China to adopt is now taking 14-16 months. Many families who waited that long and finally received their child, say that the timing was perfect - the wait was long, but if it were shorter or longer, they never would have received THEIR child who was meant for them.

*chuckles*

Someday ;). I have family in the general LA area ... and they keep asking when I'm going to make it out there. Sadly, don't have enough vacation to do that type of a trip ... tho, it is on my list. As is MN, FL, MA, etc. etc. etc. .... he he he. So many places, too little time ;).

Ya know ... you could always come visit me :).

I'm updating that post here in a moment ;). BTW, if I saw the map correctly, you're just south of KC ... where I'll be during the trip. Call me (ph# is in that road trip thread) if you want to meet up....

And, yes, everything DOES happen for a reason..... :)

Yeah, I could come visit you, Cort! It would have to be during my summer vacation...but I think we'd get along all right since we're both Virgos! :p

As soon as I find out what the four-letter word is going on with my valve.

Yes, perhaps I will see you on another trip. Sorry you haven't been feeling well ... hope you feel better soon!

What comes to my mind is when I started college. The company I worked for would only pay for my tuition if I attended classes that could be related to work. So I went to register for Accounting but Acctg. 101 was closed. So I registered for Economics 101. I got the most wonderful professor and I ended with a Degree in Economics, Magna Cum and Honor Society Omicron Delta Epsilon. I still love Economics
