Okay, so I hope I got your attention!

Too many of you are starting to come down with awful bugs and viruses and sickness because of the change of season and the general crud that is lurking out there. You have to take action!

I'm just a professional mom, here, trying to let you in on some of my simple secrets of protective living. These actions have worked for us. They are simple and I strongly urge you to try them.

Fresh squeezed orange juice! The best stuff our family has decided to invest in. We're on the west coast so I don't know if you eastern and midwesterners get Odwalla products. Now that Florida has lost much of its citrus crop, I expect the prices will go way up. But. Please. Try buying fresh squeezed orange juice. Odwalla is flash pastuerized. We buy it at Costco by the gallon. We started drinking it when my husband came down with Bell's Palsy. Funny how good it tasted, we kept drinking it, more and more and low and behold we weren't coming home with any of the viruses that were out there! We each have at least 8 oz. a day (usually more).

Also, we installed an elecrostatic (??) air filter on our furnace. It's a hassle, you have to clean it every few months, but we noticed a big difference in our air quality. (where'd all the dust go??) If you don't want to pop for that, at least be sure that you are replacing your furnace or air conditioner filters very regularly. Dirty air irritates your passageways and make a welcome environment to nasty bugs. They just want to move right in!

Molds and mildew. Okay, I live in Oregon. It might as well be called Mold-egon. We have mold every which way. Bad stuff. Again, can cause weakening of your defenses and bang! welcome invitation to viruses. Something about the mold spores, you know, in dead damp leaves, decaying wood. Make sure that you aren't growing things in your crawl spaces or basements.

That's it. Pretty simple, huh? I know that many of you have compromised health due to unbelievable circumstances, and I don't mean to belittle them at all. But honestly. If your stomach can handle the acid, just for me.....would you try a daily dose of fresh squeezed orange juice?? Just until the first of next year??? Good!!

:D Thanks! :D

Yes mommy....

Actually, I try and have a glass of OJ every day. Sometimes it doesn't get restocked, but most days there's a half gallon of some name brand that's sitting there waiting for drinking.

OJ's also one of those high potassium sources that anyone on diuretics might want to pay attention to along with potatoes (I like 'em with no sodium garlic seasoning and potassium chloride, a salt substitute) and bananas...

Oh, and tis the season for flu shots....

I'll be mentioning that a lot over the next month or two, I always get mine around my birthday along with an annual physical...

We always have citrus juice available, sometimes orange, sometimes grapefruit, sometimes an orange-banana-strawberry mix or similar. It's expensive stuff for us Yankees, though.

Best wishes,

I've been a good boy and it hasn't made a difference to me. The heck with all this OJ talk, I'm going back to Bloody Marys.

Fresh!

Fresh!

Hm. Well, I've definitely been known to mix some dark rum with my orange juice!! Not a tomato juice fan!
Look. I grew up on frozen concentrate orange juice and even afew special cartons of fancy juice. I was sick all the time like everyone else. This is not what I'm talking about. I really mean fresh squeezed. My family of 5 really really noticed a difference when we changed to the fresh squeezed juice. My cardio doesn't like all that sugar. She says, just eat an orange! Fine! I'm just advocating fresh fresh fresh. It seems to make a difference.

Then, just to show you how completley anal I am, here's afew more suggestions for keeping those nasty germs at bay:

Think about replacing the handtowel in your bathroom that everyone uses with a roll of paper towels. Just during the cold and flu season. I don't like to advocate using throw away paper, but when you think about how many Kleenex 5 sick people use up, I think it's an environmentally sound idea!

Next, each member of the family should have their own tube of toothpaste. No germ sharing when you brush your teeth!!

and lastly. When I go to push a button in an elevator, I use my knuckles. Why do we have to use our fingertips? Do you ever use your knuckles to rub your eyes, or wipe your mouth, or scratch your nose? No, of course not. THey just don't get utilized. Give them a new job!

Okay. I'll step down off my soap box now. Think of it like precycling. We Pre-cycle, as in, we avoid buying things which cannot be recycled conscientiously, right? A little thinking ahead of the game. So, we can easily practice some preventative measures as regards the cold and flu season.

Done! :) Marguerite
