OK, I know this is probably not a proper question to ask... but, can you prepare for a drinking binge while on anti-coags?

Every year I have boys weekend for my birthday and everyone tends to drink waay too much. Is there anyway to prepare and/or compensate for 2-3 days of heavy drinking... hypothectically of course. :D

Yes I know it's dangerous and yadda, yadda yadda. Just looking for real world info here, not lectures from my mother. ;)

Nope - you would just need to test afterwards to see how it affects your INR and, no, mama is not going to lecture - she knows you are aware.;):D

You need to eat about a bushel of spinach before hand and you'll be fine!

Personally, I think the most dangerous part of it would be if you hurt yourself while wasted and didn't know enough to get to an ER.

Yeah, fortunately I don't have urges to wrestle and fistfight my buddies when I drink anymore. :D
I plan to take it easy, luckily I have a couple buddies that don't drink at all, but I can pretty much guarantee I'll have more than 2 drinks that weekend.

So how does alcohol affect INR anyways? Is it a temporary rise while and imediately post drinking? Or is it akin to say doubling a dose of anti-coags; i.e. does it elevate levels and keep them elevated? I guess I'm wondering if it effects
Does that make sense? Just sort of thinking out loud here.

It doesn't hurt to have a couple of drinks, but you do have to be smart about it. I hope you enjoy yourself & do not overdo it. You are doing so well now don't go backwards.

Have fun. Maybe a couple of strippers instead of the beers? Or remaining sober & winning all the money in the card game?

Best of luck

Everyone is different as to how alcohol affects their INR. IMHO there is more danger of stomach or intestinal bleeding from a bender combined with coumadin because it can all be hard on delicate tissues that might be prone to bleeding. You could also have a condition already that is not known but might be negatively affected by the addition of so much alcohol.

Any effect on INR from one bender would be short lived.

Alcohol and Warfarin do not make good bedfellows:(. Make damn sure you "stay on top" of your INR before, during and after your bender....and keep in mind that strokes are forever:eek:.....unfortunately I have been there and done that:eek:.

How did you and I ever survive the 80's?

And don't forget the vomit effect
