Hi everyone! Hope you all had a lovely Christmas!
On Boxing day, someone asked me a question i didn't know the answer to so I thought i'd ask here.
We were at my in-laws for the day and Chloe took it upon herself to blow up balloons by mouth. Despite me telling her not to, she sneakily went into another room and did several - they were tough and required a lot of puff to do them. Anyways, just after Chloe had a tiny bit of a nose bleed - and i do mean teeny tiny, but i can only assume it was the pressure of blowing that did it??! So then my mother in law asks, "if blowing up a balloon does that, what will happen when she flies??" (We're going to Florida in August.)
I would have thought warfarin wouldn't affect her in this case, the balloon was coincidence and it must have been a sensitive blood vessel that popped. But though i should check if flying is likely to cause any problems warfarin wise. I have checked with cardi and he said no problems at all as far as her heart is concerned, but he never does seem to understand warfarin anyway, so i thought it was worth asking you all.
Has anyone had any problems with warfarin when flying???
As usual, i'll be very grateful for your advice!

Love Emma

How Exciting

How Exciting

How wonderful you are going to Florida. I truly hope you have a great time.
I have flown thousands of miles since I started taking Coumadin in 1980. I have never had any problems. My flights were varied, some short "up & down" flights and some quite long (Paris, Hawaii, etc.).
I would not think you should have any issues unless there is some issue with the age of the patient but I think not.
Hope all is terrific. Are you going to Disney World?
Smiles, :)

Thankyou for replying so fast Gina!! Pleased to hear you've never had any problems with flying!

Yep - we're staying on International Drive so will be going to Disney! YAY!! But we want to visit other parts of Florida too as none of us have ever been to America before and we are all so so excited already!

Thanks again!

You will simply love Disney World. It is as magical for adults as it is for children.
Since you will be so close, you should head over to Cape Canaveral and visit the Space Center. I will be heading that way as soon as I find out the shuttle is flying again as we love to see it take off.
Of course, there are so many places to visit in Florida and I am sure you have an itinerary but, if that is not on your list, you should try to fit it in. It is such a place of history.
I wish you a lot of fun.
Smiles, :)

Be sure to get the in-park transportation package, as it makes life so much easier.

It's winter and dry in the heated house. Add a small girl and the effort required to blow up balloons, and you've got a minor nosebleed, something incredibly common in all people of colder climates. I doubt the warfarin had any role in it. I actually had one a couple of weeks ago, and I'm not on warfarin at all. If you don't have one, I suggest you pick up a humidifier.

Disney World is a wonderful place with children (note: I am not an amusement park professional :D ). To this day, I have very vivid and pleasant memories of Disney World from bringing my young son there, who is now 20.

Have a wondeerful trip!

Hi Emma, Before I had surgery for my valve problem, I brought up the subject of flying to my surgeon because I travel a bit. He said there should be no problems after a month of the operation to fly. There may be a nose bleed inside the plane if you live at low elevation as most aircraft are pressurized to 6000-7000 ft when flying at high elevations. He didn't seem like it was a big deal but that's the surgeon, my cardio doc may say something else. I haven't talked him about it yet. Cheers, Will

Chloe will be the best protected of all on the flight. She will not have to worry about blood clots on the long flight.

Disney World is amazing. I took my kids there for the first time about 30 years ago. They had a steamboat ride that was supposed to be on the Mississippi River. I grew up along that river and thought, as I was waiting, "There will be a palm tree so it won't really look the banks of the Mississippi." But there we standing under a sycamore tree - one that does grow in that area. They get every little detail right.
