Happy New Year, everyone!

I hope this post finds you happy and healthy.

Has anyone experienced leg bruising pre-surgery or after taking BP meds? I'm still bruising very easily -- I think ever since I started taking a calcium channel blocker a few months ago.

A few weeks ago, I hit my left leg against a wall while being pulled up to a patio and my leg swelled awfully. The hematoma felt like a ping-pong ball. When the swelling went down, I had a bruise as large as a grapefruit.

Normally, I wouldn't think twice about a bruise but this one was strange: I swear I don't remember feel anything when my leg brushed against the wall. The bruise seemed ridiculous in comparison to the event.

I can live with ugly bruises but is bad bruising something that warrants a trip to the doc? I left a message with the nurse a few weeks ago and she never called back. I told her to call me only if the bruising was a concern.

Thanks for any advice or info.

Best,

With or without anticoagulants???

I suppose maybe if you have poor circulation you might show more bruising because blood isn't being passed through well enough but then, it might not be so bad because blood isn't getting to the injured area as well either due to said poor circulation...

So I go back to the anticoagulants...

Or, you could just be a klutz... :D

Sorry. I have a nasty habit of slamming my legs HARD into stuff when I'm in a rush. Have been known to knock over small tables along the way.

That's the best way to get the worst curse words out of my mouth too by the way...

Hi Kim, Happy New Year to you too! Have you begun getting your thyroid issue taken care of?

Your bruise could be medication related, or it could also be just a fluke. My sister had something similar happen. The doctor said she must have hit a vein in just the right way to rupture it. It was on her shin. She now has a vericose vein there. I remember her saying the incident itself wasn't painful, but the after affect was.

I'd certainly call the dr. if it happens again.

Hi, Karlynn. :)

Thanks -- I definitely have leg vein problems. It runs in my family and became evident during the pregnancy. I don't want to spend too much time on this topic, on the other hand, if weird bruising's a significant side-effect then I'd like to do something about it. I really don't know how to gauge it.

My PCP wants to wait three more months before putting me on synthroid. He's concerned about the chest pain. I told him that maybe if I were on the med, the chest pain would go away. My family wants me to head home to see an endocrinologist. I haven't decided what to do yet!

Blessings,

You should always be concerned with bad bruises, just keep on eye on them. If they get worse, get to an emergency room. I am not on BP meds, just warafin, and got bruses a few weeks ago. It was from my computer when I carried to where I need to take it. I did not realize that I had bruises till later when I took a shower. One little one on the right thigh. Three little ones on my stomach front. The next day found a little one on the left side of the stomach. So, if you are on certain meds, I guess, bruising can accur. Take care and good luck.

I have a low platelet level and have always bruised easier than others who's level is normal. However, now that I'm on coumadin, my bruising can be very bad.
