today i had to go to the dentist to try to fix my teeth before surgery, but it was unsucessful and I have to have it pulled out tomorrow being put to sleep. What i thought was interesting is how bad my gums were and how much bacteria they can carry to the heart.they told me that it would take months to get my gums in shape and teeth and i told them i dont have that time my surgery will be before the first of the year,so t-morrow im having my tooth pulled and they sent me home with this recipe for cleaning your teeth and gums and preventing bacteria growth, thay said that this recipe will get your gums and teeth clean as good as the dentist office would of course we would have to use it daily but i thought it would be nice to share and if your teeth are not in good shape this is one way to get ridof the bacteria and keep your teeth white
recipie below
Baking Soda Toothpaste{plain with no peroxide or flavor}
Epson Salt{not regular table salt of couse because of your heart}
1)put baking soda toothpasteon 2 rows of your toothbrush
2)dip brush with toothpaste on it into epson salt
3)pack paste into pockets between teeth and gums and jiggle brush back and forth
4)floss with unwaxed ,no flavor
5)rinse mouth with water
6)do treatment once a day until you achieved whiter teeth and healthier gums
the nurses sais that it will take a few mnths to get rid of all the bacteria and your gums looking healthier and teeth whiter, after you achieved it you can go to once a week
also said do expect pain, bleeding, sore mouth but to continue because it is well worth it.
please pray for me t-morrow imscared of a dentist major amxiety ,but i do get the"happy Pill"and put off to sleep in la la land, after this i have clearence and i speak to the dr in va on the 26th and im going to stand up and demand that we wait no longer

maybe it's not that bad

maybe it's not that bad

I hope this helps, although I know everyone is different. I am just finishing up dental work prior to my Dec 5th scheduled surgery. I went to my dentist hoping to get a "pass" to get clearance for this surgery. After initial exam dentisi said we need cleaning a one little root tip from a previously lost tooth removed. Sent me to oral surgeon for extraction and oral surgeon said we needed wisdom teeth removed also. Removed 3 wisdom teeth and extracted root tip all at same time. Then said I needed root canal ona a tooth. Had that done yesterday. Tuesday I go for retoration of that tooth and I am done. None of this was pleasant but it was all very manageable once I knew I had to do it. The price for not getting it done is way to high. So if it helps get your mind ready to get it done and when you get there think pleasant thoughts and you can get through it. One thing that struck home with me is my surgeon refused to do my proceedure without dental clearance because he said to go through this surgery and end up with an infected valve or other infection is a "tragedy" and he did not want to be a part of it if at all possible. Really, for me the anticipation was worse than the reality( that sounds familiar) . Don't mean to preach, just hoping this helps.

I must say I concur Katie. Sounds to me like Nicoles recipe may well be an infection waiting to happen. I understand that it will fix you up eventually, but with heart problems, the last thing you need to do is make your gums bleed and conduct bacteria around the blood stream.

The health price to pay by not taking care of your teeth and gums is way too high. I do not know the exact statistics, but people who do not take care of their teeth, even with a perfectly healthy heart, have an abnormally high rate of heart and circulatory problems. Today at 3PM I have oral gum surgery and I absolutely fear any dental procedure. I went thru my AVR relatively without anxiety and now five months later I really do not think about it very much . However, my appt at 3PM today has kept me up most of last night and totallly agitated all week. Bottomline, it must be done to protect my health. So..........................

Medicated

Medicated

4 CAPS @ 500 MG EACH - AMOXICILLIN ONE HOUR PRIOR

Ross - Appreciate the thought - Thanks !!

Here's something interesting I noticed, after taking "Cold-Ease" for a week for a cold, my gums looked way better and stopped the minor bleeding I've had most of my life. Now I brush twice a day with an electric toothbrush and clean every six months, no more bleeding. Cold-Ease really works for a cold and I wonder if it also affects germs in the mouth.

Peroxide can help a lot. It can also burn your mouth. Try cutting it by half with water and use that instead. Some people use baking soda mixed with peroxide and a little water as a toothpaste. It foams up and gets into the gums.

But peroxide and water rinse combo will do just fine.

Katie,

You can get peroxide on that site that is 35%!

Nancy,

We used to cut the 3% peroxide in half with water to clean wounds. It helped to debride the edges but it was a little strong for the tissues that were freshly healing.

Nicole, I am so sorry for messing up your thread! I have never liked going to the dentist and have much sympathy when I hear someone has dental work that needs to be done!

Nichol,

Thanks for bringing this up.

I never knew where my endocarditis originated, but always suspected it was from the mouth. Prior to that I had a bicuspid aortic valve and never knew it. Very fine doctors over the years never heard a murmur, yet the defect was there, waiting for a catalyst.

I became concerrned after my AVR about keeping my crooked teeth clean. I had a root canal that had me go through the Lovenox routine (yuch). The dental tech was working pretty hard to clean them (with a fair amount of bleeding - yes with antiboidics). They trouble was always around the most crooked teeth. I wanted to try and avoid more root canals. So I got braces - yes at my ripe age. It is now much easier to keep the gum line clean even with the braces still on. My next check up is in 2 weeks -expect it to go real well. PS....the braces come off 1/5/4! Yipee! :D

yes this procedure is ok for heart patience with

yes this procedure is ok for heart patience with

the peroxide as nancy says can do some bad things to your gums i also asked the oral surgeon abot it today at UNC denistry and he confirmed again this is the best way to do this "if " you do not have the insurance or the money to go through the much more complicated procedure,I quess each person and dr have thier ways i guess thats why are cases are handled diffrently.I also have carolina access which is a goverment insurance along with med and these do not approve more than one cleaning a year no matter how bad it is,you are kinda in a catch 22

Tom, you've got "tinsel teeth"!!

Actually, my daughter, 37, just had her second set of "tinsel teeth" taken off. She had them when she was a teenager, but some of her teeth moved and caused a bite problem.

i did forget to tell you all that iam on an antibiotic and take it two weeks on and two weeks off so im sure this makes a big diffrence with this procedure because he told me it would just be like him cleaning it and being premedicated, sorry i for got to put that on my post

I had braces as an adult also. I'll always remember what the orthodontist told when I whined that I would have braces until I was 28. He said, "You're going to be 28 anyway".

I've always thought of that when I undertook a long project like grad school or learning an instrument. And I was 28 anyway, but with straight teeth.:D :D

CoQ10 Plug

CoQ10 Plug

In addition to all of the baking soda and peroxide stuff, I would highly recommed CoQ10. It is a bit expensive (although the drug stores seem to have 2-for-1 sales quite a bit), but it is good for the gums AND the heart. :) I've had bleeding gums all of my life that went away with CoQ10. Yippeee! Less painful dentist visits!

CoQ10?

CoQ10?

Is this a mouthwash, or rinse? My husband sure could use that - he has a lot of trouble with gums bleeding at the dentist.

But, I am blessed. My teeth are excellent, no bleeding, no troubles [somebody, hurry, knock on wood for me]. Only 2 small cavities that were filled without novacaine, got them when I was 20. My dentist just can't get over how beautiful my teeth are. Could use some whitening, though, all that coffee and red wine takes its toll.

But, I'd like to know what that stuff is, so that I can buy some for my hubby.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
