I don't know if you all remember me. I came to this forum in January after my 33 yr. old daughter was told she'd probably need a valve replacement in 20 years. If you rremember my name is bobbie and I was in a panic.

I'd love to share these last months with you. I spent about 2 weeks glued to the computer- and got a wealth a information from you all. Then I went to work, as any good obsessed, worried mom does, and starterd investigating everything I could.

In the meantime daughter decides to get another cardio's opinion and an echo. Now we have progressed in a year from Moderate regurgitation to Mod-severe. But this Dr. too just seemed to blow her off- saying she was young yet and could wait.

I had been collecting a folder for her- and gave it to her to look at. All the young people from here who had repairs etc. done when they were healthy- all the data I had researched seemd to indicate doing this early while the heart was healthy. She was terrified but decided to take control of her health and went to a major surgeon for an opinion. Had her first TEE done. It showed her heart was enlarging ( something I read here told me that was a sign to do something) and she was very symptomatic- had been for so many years- but taking meds for anxiety.Hard breathing laying in bed- tired-out of breath- heart pounding etc. just feeling lousy for so long.

This Dr. said the problem was the anteriel leaflet(sp.?) and would be difficult to repair. He gave her 80-20 odds he could repair it. Next visit- he says now - why don't we just monitor it every 3 months etc. We were so confused. I felt he probably felt he couldn't do the repair and would rather see her wait for a few years-then he would replace it. This did not sit well with us. I suggested she might well get another opinion or as many as she could. There must be someone out there who could do this repair.

Well she started doing her homework and called me a few hours later. Seems she'd reached a top surgeon at NYU. Happens he was in the office and got on the phone. She was thrilled. He spoke to her for about a half hour- going over whatever info she had on hand. She loved his manner- his caring- it just felt right. From what she told him on the phone he said "Anterier leaflet problem? We do that all the time. About 2000 MV surgeries yearly and he had done this one many times with success. . He gave her 98% odds he could repair it.

He got her to see him within a few days and within a week after meeting her- she was in surgery! I have been worried for 6 months and now it was here. I knew how much she wanted this repair not a replacement at her age. I was on my knees in prayer- for her safety and for God to grant her this.

Well- she has had her surgery- June 7th and had her REPAIR!! She is recovering so fast we can't believe it. A few days after, she was out at the mall and visiting her sisters.

My heart is overflowing with gratitude to my God- and to the hands he guided to do this for her. She now has so much to look forward to with her 3 and 2 year old children~a healthy mom.

Just wanted to share my happiness with you all. She probably will be writing here too..

God bless you all. I still can't believe it's over. Dr. said our instincts were right. She was symptomatic, had heart enlargement etc. and that's when he believed you do this- when you are young and strong and don't have bad heart damage. He said she could have chosen to wait- but would have had the heart of an 80 year old woman.

We're off to see him Tues. for her post op visit ~I can't wait to give him another big hug.

blessings,
bobbie

What a great Mom to do all that research. Your daughter must be delighted that a repair was done!

Our daughter had mitral valve repair almost 6 months ago -- she has more energy than she has had in years! :)

I'm so glad you and your daugher were able to find someone to take her condition seriously and that she is now reaping the benefits of her repair. I'm sure she will continue to feel stronger and better every day.

All the best
Anna : )

Great News :)

Great News :)

Bobbie I'm so happy for you and your daughter. Persistence paid off. I had read the same material - if you wait to long - then more damage is done and in the long run you can't get back what you lost. My symptoms were showing up fast and even though I made alot of excuses for my shortness of breath - my husband - said its time - its your valve and you need to get it fixed. Its so hard to go into surgery - I think I was so scared. But for me it was like - one day you just wake up and you dread another day of not breathing and you think of all those days you felt so horrible and then you say to yourself - Its 'time'.. and just want it fixed. Whatever it takes..

I've had a super recovery from my open heart surgery - I call it my 5" boo boo - I was laying at the beach two weeks after surgery - riding the boogie board 3 weeks after surgery and last Saturday I did 'low' impact aerobics - of course thats the 'first' time I did low impact in 10 years - usually I do 'high'.. But hey it felt good to be there.

It just gets better everyday.. But it is a long process. I have to wait 3 mos before I can run. I still need to work on my endurance level and I still can't 'lift' much - but I do alittle more everyday. I think I'll be for the most part all better in 3 mos.

Well Congratulations to you and your daughter - Life is just GREAT and so many happy days ahead. :)

My surgeon is from New Hampshire - (Dr. Anthony Discipio) a real top notch surgeoon and he did a fantastic job. I think his surgical expertise is having a huge part on my speedy recovery. There are so many good doctors out there. I feel fortunate to have gotten one of the best. As I'm sure your daughter did as well. :)

Best Wishes

What a story! Please tell your daughter congratulations! I'm glad she is doing so well!

It's great to hear that persistence made a great pay off. After all you've done and all you've read, you can easily see why some people are not so lucky. Some only seek one opinion and that is downright dangerous.

Good luck to all in the future!

Your post should be a must-read for those in the waiting room and anyone logging on just to see if he/she ought to be worried. Congrats on terrific persistence and taking control of her health.

I'm so glad she found a good, experienced, responsive surgeon. Now the bogeyman's been laid to rest, your daughter will really begin to enjoy her life (again).

Congratulations on a successful surgery and repair! Great that you found a surgeon who took the condition seriously. Unfortunately, it makes you wonder if she continued to wait as her originals doctors instructed, repair eventually might not have been an option.

Too bad we have to shop doctors just like we shop for the best deal on cars.....

Bobbie, what an amazingly inspirational story, and what an incredible mother you are. Your daughter is blessed! Congratulations, enjoy her and your grandchildren.

Wow!!! Great news!

Keep healthy and enjoy your newfound lease on life!!! =)

It was here that I read about going to a surgeon - I think it was Ross's words that really hit home along with so many others. If we had listened to the cardio's recommendations- I, too wonder if the repair would have been possible.. My mind tells me a REALLY good Dr. - a really good person- would suggest you see a surgeon for an opinion. No skin off his nose. I just can't figure out why they would want to wait- seeing a young woman suffer . Wait for what????

I know I was led here. I always felt other opinions were the way to go- but by reading and listening to everything here- just confirmed it for me.

I will be forever grateful for finding you all and you are always in my prayers for your continued health and help to others.

I'm sure you'll be hearing from me quite a bit now that my brain is getting back to a normal mode!!

Blessings,
Bobbie

Hi Mark!

Thanks. It is great news isn't it. Janine had Dr. Giovanni Cuiffo do it. There was some conflict with Colvion with her insurance- but he was excellent and just the perfect doc for her.

She is feeling like a new person in just these past 3 weeks. Can wake up without being exhausted, and grumpy with the kids because she can't get out of bed! They come running in, and she sits up and can BREATHE and feel good for the first time in about 15 years. She's still learning when enough is enough though. She forgets she can't do everything yet- and then gets tired. But she is truly a new person.

Sorry I go on so, but it is just so wonderful I can't help myself!

How are you doing? Tell me everything is still great for you. I am ahppy you had your repair and wish you all the best.

blesdsings,
bobbie

Bobbie:

What wonderful news! I'm so thrilled for your daughter and entire family... just shows that WE must take responsibility for our health and bodies and not always leave it up to a doctor to tell us what to do. They don't always know... Better to get 2 or 3 opinions than to just wait, if the first doctor says that.

Your daughter certainly has a new lease on life.
