Does anyone know of good places to learn about different surgeries ect for backs? I've been going to a pain doc for years, (I was sent there by a couple back docs who didn't want to operate until it couldn't be avoiided)but it seems to be getting worse (well 1 part of it, that is pressing on my sciatic nerve) so wanted to learn a little more about the different surgeries, pro/cons ect
Thanks

A relative recently had a procedure called a kyphoplasty, reducing their greatest pain from a bad fall, but they still have some other lesser back pain which the docs haven't figured out yet. I don't know if it's a new type of procedure or not but I'd never heard of it before their surgery.

I just did a quick search about it, because I couldn't remember how it was spelled, and saw a few "back sites," though of course I don't know if they're beneficial sites or advertising sites.

Lyn, I haven't had back surgery myself, but I nursed my mother for 3 months after her last one (spinal fusion). Can I please just say to you be very, very, careful about who you choose to do your surgery.

I won' t go into the details of her surgery, but will say that while it took away her back pain, she has been left with leg pain that she now sees a pain specialist for and will be taking pain meds for for the rest of her life. She also is unsteady on her feet due to residual weakness in one of her legs as a result of her surgery.

Thanks, I will. I'm sorry to hear about your Mom, I have a few problems with my back (a few herniated disks and a few bad vert from degenerative disks and facet pain, which I still don't understand, but honestly I don't research things as much for me as I do Justin) , but the part I MIGHT need the surgery for his my leg nerve that is getting worse. I had a spinal stimulator implanted years ago, to fool your brain into not feeling pain, I wasn't a big fan, never got used to the feeling (kind of the buzzzzing like when your hand or leg falls alseep) AND it didn't stop all the pain, BUT that quit working a few years ago and I wouldn't get a new one implanted (and the old wires yanked from my spine column) I alway thought it was odd Justin's pacer and MY stimulator (that looks like a pacer) both broke..what a lucky familiy :) anyway I had a spinal block last week, and a weird thing is I was laying on the table face down and they put straps around your legs, and I asked why they only strapped 1 leg or if it was around both, it was around both, but I could only feel the strap on my left leg, which apparently isn't a good thing. usually it gives alot of relief this time it didn't, so we'll try 1 more time, then go from there, I might PM you after I see how that goes if it is ok

Lyn, Sorry your block didn't work, hope the next one does the trick. I took my mom for several of those and I know they aren't a walk in the park. Feel free to PM me any time.

Lyn:

My sister has had a number of orthopedic surgeries, including back. She doesn't really talk much about them. She's having partial hip joint replacement on Nov. 16, rescheduled from last month due to a cold. Her problems stem from having lupus.

Anytime I am curious about a medical condition or procedure, I google for it and either the Mayo Clinic or Cleveland Clinic to get what either/both of those renowned institutions have to say about it.
