Hi Folks, I'm here in the hospital waiting for my INR get back in shape following a hernia operation, but I did come back from a camping/hiking trip in Utah last week. It was in Utah's Grand Staircase Escalante, about 4 driving hours south of Salt Lake City. I was part of a 10 person group, the guides were from REI and it was remote car camping for 5 days. We used the van for day hikes outside of our campsite. The hikes where very fun, beautiful and not much of a physical problem. There was some scrambling using the arms that gave me some shoulder pain (post replacement 5 months now) so I would hike around those. The weather was cool but nice. It all seems surreal now that I'm setting here in a hospital gown. Will

wow - from Tampa to Utah. You must've loved it. And aren't you glad you went before the hernia operation. Might be awhile til you can do it again. Hang in - home is waiting for you.

That's great that you had that trip..and at 5 months post-op.. :D ...Be careful when you do go home...My S/I/L...had a very hard time last year when he had his hernia .repaired..Ended back in the hospital for a redo, ect... Lots of bleeding..and he is not on Coumadin... ..The packing, ect. when you go home..Be careful..And take it very easy..NO heavy lifting, ect. Holy cow can I relate to this! Er, at least the surrealness of it all. I know each time I get back from one of my road trips I wonder if I actually did go...something odd about that, ya know?

Hope your INR gets back in shape soon so you can go home!

Sounds like a great trip! Isn't it even sweeter to do stuff like that after OHS?

Good luck w/ the hernia and the coumadin. You'll be back up in no time. Great to hear from you!

Yea Bill, it does feel different after OHS. I get a greater sense of accomplishment from these "active trips" now. It seems to be not what you can do, but what you can do with the time.
Knightfan and the surrealness of trips - yes, I've came back from a number and felt like I must have been in an another world or something. Experiences so far out of the normal realm that I find myself not wanting to talk about them, as the people I talk to are unable to relate in anyway. Cheers, Will

I'm curious what you mean by this.... I can hardly imagine people not being able to relate to the surrealness feel of a trip.... Maybe that's just me, but I feel that way after most every trip ... seems like it almost never happened. But, perhaps, that goes under the "time flies when you're having fun" umbrella.

*shrugs*

Darned if I know ;).

BTW...just saw your other post ... congrats on being released from the hospital :).

This goes with "level of interest". When I talk about camping (i.e. sleeping bag and mat, no toilet, etc.), climbing, hiking, foreign counties and cultures to people that don't do that, the conversation goes nowhere. I get a blank look in response a lot of times. It's no big deal, that stuff isn't for everybody. Will

Have you ever thought about hiking the Applachian Trail?...From Springer Mountain in Georgia to Maine? 2,160 miles.......It goes right behind my house about 10 miles from here....There is a very old Stone house up there for a Rest stop..Built during Roosevelt's time...I love going up there..See many people stopping to rest, wash clothes, ect. Many have their dogs with them...Most people just do the short trips...Like from there back down to Springer Mountain..About a 2 day trip... The Old Stone house has supplies that you need for 2 day trips..I love watching all the people come thru..and asking them..Where did you start? The Northeast Georgia Mountains are beautiful...then it winds from here into North Carolina..You can google..Applachian trail and find the route... I have walked a mile back from this stop..and wish I were younger..to keep going.. :D Bonnie

Ah, I understand what you mean now. Guess I'm surprised you get the blank look a lot of times ... sounds like an interesting conversation piece to me....

And, uh, Bonnie, any single females along that path? ;)

Hi Bonny, I love the mountains in that region. I went the college right below the Great Smoky Mountains Nation Park. I like to go up there every winter for a week or so to do some hiking. The park has 800+ miles of trails and it's a goal to do them all. I've got quite a few highlighted on my trail map that means done. Will

Hope you are home out of the hospital by now..been 4 days since you last posted... B/T/W..which College did you go to?...Below the Smokey Mountains?..The only one I can think of is Mars Hill up above Ashville, N.C...These hills :D are my stomping grounds.. :D We had a Condo in Banner Elk N.C. for many years... and we camp in Cherokee N.C. several times a year in our R.V... Only 2 hours from my house. :D Bonnie

Will-

Sounds like a great trip. I know exactly what you mean about the 'surreal' feeling and others not understanding. The second best thing about the trips. after actually being there, is the memories of the great places we saw, the people we met, and the things we did that we don't get to do every day.

And you're right - those who don't camp, or who don't enjoy foreign travel, just don't get it. But then I don't 'get' those whose idea of a great vacation is to schlep loads of luggage and stay only with busloads of other Americans...

William,

Glad to here you are so active. To some, "roughing it" is when the remote control is broken at the Hyatt.

Best wishes with the hernia recovery and getting your INR in line. Let us know how you're doing.

Hi Granbonny and others, I've been busy around here for the past few days that's kept me from posting. As for college, I leaved just south of Sylva, NC and went to SouthWestern Tech College. I also went to Western Carolina Universty and took film classes. That was when I was gonna change the perception of the world with my Super-8 movie camera. Will
