Hey all. My surgeon has said i can choose between an ATS or an On-X mechanical to replace my Aortic Valve. I would like some input to help me with my decision. I have heard good things about both valves but I am interested in the new studies with low anticoagulation to do with the On-X valve. Any Info would be much appreciated. My surgeon seems to prefer ATS.

Thanks Brad

My husband has the ATS aortic valve. His doctor also highly recommeneded it. He has had it for 3 and a half years. His last echo showed trace leakage(about the same for any person his age) he is 55. I have also heard good things about the ON-X and know several people on this site have that one.
He INR range is 2.0 - 3.0. But, we don't worry if its 2.0-4.0.

I officially have the ON-X valve as of 4 weeks ago today. I also thought it was a good valve to chose because of the asprin studies that are going on and also the low INR rate you can have. I have the outlook that I am going to be on coumadin for life, but if it went to asprin I would be extremely thrilled (and I do cross my fingers for the asprin!). I learned from Emma on this site that the valve has been on the market for 10 years in the UK - 5 years here in the US. She is a good resource because her daughter has had the valve for 4 years.
Here is a helpful website to look at if you haven't already:

I have had the ATS aortic valve for about 3 weeks now my doctor also highly recommeneded it. I also have heard good things about the ON-X I talked with my surgeon about both, he prefers the ATS over The On-X I also liked the lower INR range that the ON-X offers, but I went with what my surgeon knows best. He also advised me that the ATS valves were one of the most quietest valves out there. I have been advised to keep my INR range between 2.5 and 3.5.

On-X Shows lots of major promise, but no matter what, you still have to be anticoagulated and that's not likely going to change anytime within the next 10 years or more. Either valve is good. Go with what your surgeon wants to work with.

Of course I would say the On-X.
But just from a logical standpoint, wouldn't you want a chance at aspirin only. The On-X can do it, I don't know about the ATS.

Both are excellent valves, and you shouldn't feel cheated with either one.

But I agree with Rich.

If there's even a chance that you might eventually be able to move to aspirin from warfarin, without giving up any valve performance, it is certainly something I would jump at.

Noise seems to have more to do with your personal interior accoustics than any other single factor. I believe that if there is a difference in the ticks and tocks, it will be on a level too small to make a practical difference to you.

By the way, On-X also claims to be quite quiet, due to its low-impact hinge setup. It would make sense to consider that any valve that has a very low rate of red blood cell damage (which is mostly caused by the valve leaflets closing hard and the hinge's action) almost has to be a quieter valve by its nature.

Best wishes,

I could always put a batt of R38 insulation in his chest and he'd never hear anything. Not even the Doctor would! :D

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks again guys for the input. Still reading as much as I can about both valves but I think I am leaning towards the On-X.

Brad

My 5 year old daughter has an ON-X mitral valve and is doing really well with it. She's had it for 4 years now.
I won't go into masses of detail as I've talked about it before on here so if you search for On-X you should get a load of information up about it anyway but if I can help any more just yell.
Good luck with making your decision
Emma
