At least I'm not the only one back in hospital

Well, it does look like I have myself a good little infection brewing. I showed up at my cardio's office at 9:00 this morning and he came right out and got me...I pulled my shirt down on the way to the exam room to show him my redness and he said, Kim, this is not good! So, he had a surgeon come down and he said I needed to go into the hospital today...I said I have plans to go out of town for the weekend and he said not anymore, you don't. So, here I sit, in room 6908 for I don't know how many days of IV antibiotics. I'm supposed to get a CT at some point to (hopefully) make sure that it isn't deep within my chest. The biggest concerns are infection of the sternum itself and of course the valve. I really am optimistic that it isn't going to be that big of a deal at the end of the day. I just hate being here when I feel really well otherwise.

I hope all of us that have hit these bumps recently are soon well on our way to being healed!

I was thinking this is how it would play out for you.

I had a massive infection after my last OHS that required the reopening of the chest and removal of infected tissue that had actually wrapped around the muscles. Luckily it did not affect my valve. I did end up with a couple herniated areas but, all in all, was very lucky.

Just telling you this because I wanted you to know that these can be fixed even if severe. Hoping you will respond to just meds and not require any surgical intervention.

Have someone bring you barbeque food.

Kim, I am so sorry you are having these problems. I too hope that the infection isn't deep seated and you are soon doing much better.

Bummer Kim! My mom had the same deal-she was on a picc line antibiotics for many weeks after her infection was caught. Kind of a pain, but the meds did their job. I am sorry you are in the hospital-best wishes for a speedy recovery!!! Deb

Wow Kim, I am so sorry. What happened? I know you thought maybe the seat belt had caused it. I am sure they will get it figured out and you will do fine. Keep us posted.

Thanks for all of your responses. Kathy, I don't really know what happened. The seat belt didn't cause it...I just noticed a redness and was hoping it was being caused by either my seat belt or bra. All I can say to all of you who go through surgery is to be vigilant about how your incision area feels and looks. Because I noticed that mine had become more sore and uncomfortable and that I had this redness that looked like I had a bad sunburn, they think that we have caught this early enough that I won't need more surgery.

I'm now on my second type of antibiotic because I had an allergic reaction to the first earlier today. I spoke to my surgeon at the Mayo clinic today to get him up to speed and make sure he agreed with the plan here. I also put him on notice that if anything happens to this valve I will be on the first plane there and wanted to make sure he is around. So, he is now in touch with my Dr.'s here and is going to check in with me on Monday.

Fingers still crossed!
