I have a st. jude mitral valve. Someone told me not to take asprin with coumadin, seems like it was from St. Jude. My Dr. wants me to take a baby asprin, and I know I have read not to. Can you help me

I take a baby aspirin every day and I have been on coumadin for 25 years. You should not have any bleeding issues if your INR is in range and you ONLY take the baby aspirin (and not other meds like Advil). Aspirin does not show up in your INR so you cannot tell about any overdose issues from the INR. Just watch out for other signs of bleeding like stomach problems or excess bruising (above and beyond what you have with coumadin).

Aspirin acts differently on the blood than coumadin which is why many of us take both.

Let me add my name to previous posters. I take 81 mg aspirin per day because it acts on the platelets. It's never been a problem with my mechanical.

My husband takes an 81 mg aspirin every day. And, he takes coumaden. Two St. Jude valves.

In February of this year, he ran out of the aspirin and didn't take one for two days, thinking the coumaden protected him. He had a TIA. He hasn't missed a dose since.

The exact wording of the warning was probably something like, "Do not take aspirin without your physician's consent." This gets translated in the brain to, "Do not take aspirin."
