After AVR on July 6th (2004), my surgeon(s) recommended 81 mg of Aspirin per day. During my 6 month checkup, the cardiologist didn't think aspirin therapy was required, especially since my pre-surgery angiogram showed normal coronary arteries. So I stopped Aspirin for the last 2 months. Today, my cardiologist called and suggested I return to 81 mg of Aspirin (He probably double-checked with the surgeon).

Anyway, I was curious how many individuals take Warafin and Aspirin (low-dose). I've heard both sides of the story . . .

Thanks!
P.S. - I've had no clottting or bleeding issues. My INR has been stable between 2.0 & 3.0 for the last 8 months.

I've been on the regimen ever since surgery in July of 2002. I believe many of us are. I know we've all questioned it at one time or another, but it still seems a valid thing to do.

Hello Buzz

My husband, Tyce, who had AVR 6/02 takes both warfarin and aspirin 81mg 3 times a week. Our cardio believes in it and we haven't had any problems with it. He's been on it since he was post op.

Buzz,
I take both and have done so for about 15 years. I was having a lot of problems with TIA's and the coumadin was not preventing them. I was put on the 81mg of aspirin (baby aspirin at the time since the low dose was not available any other way back in the old days) and the TIA's virtually stopped. I still have an occasional one but very mild.
I guess the coumadin and the aspirin prevent different things (something to do with platelets vs. outright clots) but I am not savvy enought to understand the process. I only know it works.

It seems like there have been several studies that mentioned in passing that there was no visible benefit of using both, but it's probably harmless at worst.

Also, a study stated that the 81mg coated type is not absorbed as well by many people as the uncoated type. However, I don't know that it would be a good idea for someone on warfarin to take uncoated aspirin every day, either...

A quandary,

All,

Thanks for the replies regarding Warafin & Aspirin . . .

By the way Ross, I've re-applied for my FAA medical certificate. In one of my initial threads, you responded about flying, although I can't remember the specific contents. Anyway, I sent the requested information to the FAA last week after waiting-out the mandatory six-month recovery period (per the FAA's "Protocol for Cardiac Valve Replacement").

I'll keep you posted . . .

P.S. - I've still been flying in the 8 months following surgery. Fortunately, the FAA allows flight instructors to instruct (and log time) without a medical, assuming they don't act as pilot-in-command.

I too take coumadin and a 81mg baby aspirin daily. Had a mitral valve replacement on 02/03. Fell and took a big slice out of my shin and it took 6 days to stop bleeding. The Surgeons seem to be prescribing this.

Just released from hospital on Fri Feb 25. Had my AVR reop with a mechanical valve this time. The pharmacist who met with me in the hospital to discuss Coumadin indicated I should not use any aspirin products while on Coumadin, so I was surprised with the people who do take both. Have not met with my cardiologist yet, though, so I will see what he says.

I've been given to understand that you shouldn't take aspirin and Coumadin. I take Vicodin prn for pain, no problems with it messing with my INR.

I also take 81 mg aspirin and warfarin daily. I questioned it - the cardiologist said they affect coagulation differently and to take both. They really really don't want clots and a mechanical in the mitral position is the most susceptible to clots. I've never had a problem with bleeding.
