Hi,
It's been awhile since I was here. I am 31 years old now. I had ASD repair when I was 9 years old and have mvp. I found out back last year around Dec/Jan that I have a tricuspid leak of 3+. We thought it was the picc line that cause it but it wasn't. Been on consant watch by my cardio. Been having fluttering and my right hand/arm turns ice cold and pale color. So I went to my cardio to find out why the fluttering and found out that I have tachycardia, low blood pressure, and circulation problem. I was put on toprol xl 25 mg 1/2 tablet daily due to many episodes of tachycardia. Here's a few questions that I am wondering: 1)Is the tachycardia caused by my family history? 2)Is the tachycardia is caused by the issue of the valve problems? 3)Is there such thing that you can out grow the patch that is on the valve? 4) There was a residue murmur left after the asd repair(meaning the hole was not completely patched),can that be warrented for a second surgery? 5) Is there such thing as to having second surgery after having the first one that was done many years ago? I do not consume any caffeine in my diet and eat very healthy and not in any stress. My mother recently remember that the cardio said "one day as she gets older she will need a second surgery" does that mean because of the patch or the residue? I went for my blood work this morning and have echo scheduled this week to find out more. If echo shows something cardiac cath is next. I am very concerned especially if I am leaning towards another surgery. Another things is that tachy do run in my family especially at a young age,my cousin who is 26 years old has it and is pregnant right now and having lots of tachy so far and my mother went through it when she was 17 and had a heart attack at 18 due to tachy and thyriod problem, I don't know if the tachy caused her to have the heart attack or the combo of tachy and thyriod caused it. If the toprol xl helps how long can you stay on it before considering surgery? What kind of road will I be heading? Any input will be helpful!

There are all kinds of tachycardias, some are just normal fast heart rates that everyone gets from time to time caused by???, maybe caffeine in coffee tea and soda, chocolate which has something similar that can make your heart race, anxiety etc. Other tachies are different levels of problems depending on what is going on. You need to find out the EXACT type of tachycardia your doctor is seeing, and if he thinks it is the kind that is problematical. Medications can help some tachycardias, and there are other things to help the most problematic ones.

I don't have any specific answers for you, sorry. I was thinking, however, that it might be beneficial for you to contact the hospital where you had the surgery as a child and get copies of your operative report, etc., especially if some of the recollections of that event are vague. Your current doctors might be aided in your treatment to have access to your full heart history.

Hi,Nancy
Just want to say thanks for the input. In my case the tachy that I get is not caused by stress or caffeine or chocolate because I do not consume any caffeine or chocolate and not in any stress. He thinks that there is some problem going on with the heart or family genetics but most likely stemming from the heart. My ekg showed something going on and my echo from last year showed the tricuspid leak.He is doing some more testing to find out. If this echo shows anything positive to be concern of then he will do cardiac cath. I just started medication for it today, the reason why he put me on it because he thinks its problematic and due to my past history.

Hi,Susan BAV
Just want to say thanks for the input. My cardio sent for the rest of my records from the hospital that I had surgery at and will let me know more when they arrive. He does have one of the record from the cardiologist- its from the last day I went there and it says" in the future a second surgery is warrented for closure of residue murmur". He is getting all of the records from beginng to end to decide what treatment is needed and if I stay on this medication that I am on right now. I will keep everyone post when I get any more info.

I was wonderring if your cardiologist is one that specializes in adults w/ congenital heart defects? I hope you get snawers soon, lyn
