Hi
I'm looking for some advice. 29 years ago aged 4 I had an ASD ostium primum patch repair. I am female btw:)

I've never had any issues or concerns. Twice now I have been to my local doctors practice and seen 2 different doctors both of whom have stated that they think I have a heart murmur. I explained I had an ASD repair and neither of them suggested any follow up.

So what I would like to know would an ASD repair cause my heart to sound different? I'm guessing that I shouldn't have a heart murmur given that the ASD was supposed to correct this via the closure of the holes in my heart. I have no symptons and otherwise in perfect health. In truth I haven't even thought about the repair for the last 29 years and have led an active normal life always.

I'm wondering if I should pursue my doctor for futher tests? I would like to start a family and so I'm thinking perhaps I should have this checked in advance?

If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Many Thanks

C

With your insurance can you bypass a referral? If so, might you make an appt with a cardiologist yourself? It will put your mind at ease. I was told for a few years I had a mild murmur. Within 10 years I had surgery. Go with your gut. If you're not being heard.

I agree I would want to see a cardiologist and would ask if an echocardiogram would be appropriate.

Welcome to VR. Happy you found us and hope you get the answers you need from your doctors to put your mind at ease.

Hi C,

I'm from the UK too ! I would second what others have said about seeing your GP and asking for a referral to see a cardiologist, especially in view of the fact that you want to start a family.

all the best,
Anne
