Just want to be double sure: When someone with an artifical valve has surgery, they should be given antibiotics before AND after, right?

Thank you. My mom had surgery last week for a new dialysis access and now the arm is infected. She has always been given prophylactic antibiotics, but NOT this time.

I had a colonoscopy 6 mos after AVR. I had to take 4 amoxicillin pills as I do before dental work and just for added measure the doctor gave me a good shot of antibiotics after the procedure.

In all fairness, an infection like that could come up even if you DID take antibiotics before and after surgery as a precaution...
The antibiotics make it harder for an infection to develope, not impossible.
