What sort of arm exercises were you given after surgery, I'm 6.5 weeks out and have some chest muscle issues so I never asked but would like to do some sort of exercise :)

Hi, Lynn.

I just started cardiac rehab a couple of weeks ago. I'm 5 wks post.

They gave me a sheet detailing some specific arm exercises that have definitely helped me in the sternum/rib cage area.

If you'd like, I can scan the sheet and post it as a pdf.

The exercises are pretty simple, and, right now for me at least, don't involve weights.

Lemme know.

Stretch, that would be awesome! Thank you!!

I didn't get into rehab as I've had issues with heart rate, temp, etc. and they only have it in the mornings and I was hoping to go back to work soon

Lynn,
I remember they told me I could start using a light weight (I said 5, they said 3 lbs) and lift my arms over my head, that was about 6-7 weeks I think. I just started yesterday with a 5 lb (now Im 11 weeks post op, and they cleared me to lift up to 15 lbs now), it seems too lite for me so I just got a 10 pounder because I think I will outgrow the 5 any minute. Thats me though. Everywhere I read they say to lift less weight with more reps.

Hi Lynn,

Wow, your recovery sounds very good at 6 weeks post surgery. I am 2.5 years post and I remember what I felt like at 6 weeks. I did get into cardio rehab at about 8 weeks and it worked wonders for me.

Please consider doing this if you can!. I signed up for an 8 AM class and it lasts about 1 hour. I went to work after the class. My hospital also had a 7 AM class but that was too early for me !!! They put a wireless EKG on each of us and monitored us throughout the hour. If they saw any anomolies (a-fib, too high a rate), they would run over and slow us down. They reallly helped to speed my recovery. I realized during that class how much I used (pre-op) to over do it during exercise. By this, I mean pushing myself too hard.

Also, don't be in too big a hurry to back to full time work. This surgery is very hard on your body, and rest and mild exercise like walking is great. You really need to get the rest you need to get back to full power. Working too hard too early could cause a set back in your recovery. "Pain is not the sign of weakness leaving the body !"

As for the weights and exercises I would recommend asking your cardio. He knows you condition better than anyone.

Good luck,

Jim

From what I have gathered over the past 8 years.....cardiac rehab is the WTG! My surgeon did not suggest it for me as a. I was a "youngin" b. had a 2 year old to chase after. He felt that was rehab enough. Which it was:) But for muscular issues. Upper back...which I do have flares from time to time. Wish I would have worked them out in rehab!

Good luck to you!
