Today's been one of those days, I tell ya. I started off super tired thanks to storms moving through around 4:45am, so I have been up forever.

But I seem to be having all kinds of weird symptoms - who knows if they're related to each other or heart-related, for that matter, but I thought I'd throw them out here to get opinions.

Two different times today I've noticed palpatations - which I never get if I'm taking my atenolol regularly (I haven't made any changes on that, either - took it last night like usual... sometimes I'll get a racing heart beat when I'm in my husband's truck, but this was different). I would feel a single thump in my chest, and then it felt like my heart would miss a beat. It did this about 4 times before lunch, and then it just did it again a few times a couple hours ago.

Then after the first time it did that before lunch, when I was on my way home, I just felt almost like a heavines in my chest - it was hard to explain. It was a feeling like I had to make myself breathe if that makes sense. And just a weird feeling in my chest - again, almost a pressure or heaviness. Anyone ever had that? (I've noticed that here and there lately)

In addition to all of that, I've gotten one of my headaches... my right temple just feels like a knife is sticking through it, and this has been going on for two hours now... probably will continue into the night. I've gotten them occasionally (in the past few months), and they have lasted over 12 hours before. Tylenol doesn't help. I don't know if it's a migraine, stress, exhaustion or what. But with the other weird things going on today I thought I'd throw that in there.

Anyone ever experienced any of this to give me any ideas as to what's going on? I have valve issues that need to be fixed via operation at some point (my artifical mitral valve - one of the leaflets has been sticking, then I have a membraine near my aortic valve, plus the aortic valve is leaky).

I just feel like I'm being paranoid, yet I don't want to ignore things if they shouldn't be ignored.

Thanks for any input!
Kerri :)

Hi Kerri,

The palpitations and irregular rhythm are definitely heart related but if it anything to be concerned about or not might best be left to your cardiologist. I'd give him/her a call and see what advice is given. You've had heart problems for a long time and some things have been fixed and somethings still need to be. Sometimes when I'm tired or not feeling good for some other reason my heart decides to act up too. Maybe it is the same with you but it still warrants a call to your MD. Hope everything goes well.

Occassionally I?ll get a PVC (Pre-Ventricular Contraction) or PAC (Pre-Atrial Contraction) which will sometimes cause me to have a hesitant breath or two. Usually if it?s just one PVC this will only last for a second or two. If it?s a run of a couple PVCs or PACs it can last a few seconds but then it goes back to normal. To me, my PVCs or PACs feel like a hard heartbeat, like a thump in my chest, kinda hard to explain. I don?t get them very often but when I?m very anxious I get them more often than when I?m calm.

Actually got one of these caught on an event monitor once, caused me to not be able to breath for a few seconds. That?s how I associated it to PVCs, because that?s what the event recorder showed. Sometimes a PVC or PAC won?t affect breathing but occasionally it does for some reason, kinda weird.

Check with your doctor but I was told that PVCs or PACs aren?t dangerous or really that important unless you are having so many that it?s really disturbing. Some people have many thousands a day. In those cases doctors do try medication to alleviate the problem. Other than that doctors usually say don?t worry about them, but I?d check with your doctor as I don?t know if your medical condition would indicate something different. In most cases they?re nothing to worry about, assuming what you are experiencing are PVCs or PACs.

Ask your doc!
