Does anyone have any recommendations for a Cardiac Surgeon in Boston for aortic valve replacement?

My mother (age 72) was recently diagnosed with severe aortic valve stenosis, and I would like to find a facility that has as many treatment choices available as possible (e.g., minimally invasive vs. ohs), so that all options can be considered, and a recommended surgeon. We are currently looking into the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Mass. General, but are open to other ideas. (Any recommendations for Cardiologists in Boston would be welcome, too.)

Thank you in advance for any input that you may be able to provide. My mother does not have internet access, so she will appreciate my conveying your responses to her.

I am so happy to have found this site and have learned so much here. Thank you very much for your time.

Cleveland Clinic minimally invasive Surgery

Cleveland Clinic minimally invasive Surgery

I had minimally invasive surgery at Cleveland Clinic in 1999 for my Aortic Valve. Not everyone qualifies for this type of surgery. You could call Cleveland and find out which surgens are doing this type of surgery and if they think you mother would qualify. Also they have a lot of information on their web site about this type of surgery. Good luck with her surgery. How soon does she have to have it done? At Cleveland I used Joseph Sabik, M.D. who specializes in adult minimally invasive Surgery. http://www.clevelandclinic.org/staff/getstaff.asp?StaffId=2088

Dick had minimally invasive aortic valve replacement with Dr. Cohn at Brigham and he highly recommend Dr. Cohn, the hospital and the entire staff. Mass General also has a wonderful reputation. Best wishes to you and please feel free to private message me with any questions.

I had VR surgery at Mass General 2 years ago and was very impressed with surgeon, facility, nursing staff, etc. Would expect that B & W is great choice as well. Would be happy to tell you more if you're interested.

You won't get any better advice than Phyllis and Ross have given you. Good luck to your mother, I'm sure she will be fine.:)

Hello:

Dr. Gus Vlahakes is the hea of cardiac surgery at Mass General. He performed my husband's first surgery five years ago, dueal St. Jude valves. He is also going to be doing the second surgery, to repair his tricuspid valve, on Feb. 14th. He is down to earth, competent, and truly cares about his patients. -Marybeth
