Anyone using the new ProTime® Microcoagulation System?- Introduced in July 2006.
On paper it appears to have much to commend it.
It's presence/availability worldwide together with it's strips may be something else

Hi John,

I've been using the Protime Microcoagulation System for almost 7 years. I use an older model and have not bought a the newer model because this one works just fine.
I love the freedom of not having to go to labs or clinics and have to wait for the results which can take days. It's easy to take on vacations as it doesn't take up a lot of room. I keep it in my carry on so it doesn't get lost.
I can't say enough good things about self testing.

Good luck.

I used one for 3 years. I was glad to have it and have the ability to home test. That's much more preferable to labs and offices any day.

However, I had problems with the built-in battery with mine that eventually caused me to get a new machine (the INRatio). It wasn't unusual to have to run 2 or 3 tests with the ProTime before getting a reading due, to air bubble errors.

If you are free to consider other types, I would recommend checking out the INRatio. It's 1/2 the size of the ProTime. The blood collection is much easier, the strips are less expensive and it operates off of AA batteries, or an AC adapter you can purchase.

I know we have members that really like their ProTime. I just fine my INRatio much more simple and convenient.

Coagucheck also has a small unit now. I don't know much about it, other than it looks similar to the INRatio. It's called the Coagucheck XS.

My main recommendation is - if you can home test - do so, regardless of what machine you get. It's much more convenient and studies are showing that those that home test have more stable INR's with less incident than the lab tested population.

I was going to ask the same question. I saw an advertisement for the new model and it looked a lot more compact. From the picture I got the feeling that the curvettes and other supplies were basically the same. I don't know what the cost is though. I've had my pro-time monitor for over 4 years and it still works well although the battery no longer holds a charge. Someday I'll replace it but it still has some life left in it.
