My daughter's mother-in-law is visiting her for several months and has CHF and possible valve problems, and is not feeling well at all. Anyone know of a good cardiologist in the Long Island, NY area? They live in Commack.

Hi Nancy,

I'm not as far out as Commack, but I live somewhat on the border of LI in Queens. I've seen several cardiologists on the island, I can tell you St. Francis Hospital is known as the heart hospital and has a very good reputation. I had my angiogram done there on 9-12-01 by a Dr. Stephen Gullotta, He was named as one of the top 100 cardiologists in NY. I did not follow through with him because he was a little old fashioned for me and we bumped heads a little. But I know his affiliates also have wonderful reputations. I also saw a few Dr's at North Shore Hospital, I was followed by a Dr. Guy Mintz who was affiliated with N. Shore and he was very good, He recommended I go to an Echo specialist at NY Presbyterian in the city and I would highly recommend her to anyone, Her name is Dr. Mary Roman. I know the travelling into the city is a pain but I go every 2-3 weeks. If you need any more info, I'd be happy to help. Hope all is well with you and my best wishes to Joe.

Island Cardiovascular - Dr. Ganguly in Hauppauge. I've been seeing him for 20 years - the best.

Dr David Sherman of Columbia Pres Hospital, NYC.......A warm, caring cardio who I have used with my surgeon, Dr Eric Rose also of Columbia. He is one of the best cardios especially in reading echograms. I have referred him to several friends and all can attest for his thoroughness in analyzing valve/heart problems.

Worth the trip in to "The Apple"

If you need contact info or referral please let me know.

hi nancy!
as nicole mentioned, st. francis hospital is a great heart hospital and is closest to commack. bob has a point though, columbia presbyterian has great cardio teams....eric rose, mehmet oz, craig smith, and more.
maybe it's worth a drive?
good luck, wish i could help more.
all the best,

Thanks everyone for all the wonderful recommendations. This is a fantastic place. Everyone is so helpful. My daughter did get an appointment with a cardiologist for her mother-in-law, I'm not sure of the name. The poor woman was in dire condition. She got a few scrips for Lasix and Digoxin and Zestril. Apparently her lungs are very, very congested.

Hi Nancy,

If you daughter is not happy with the doctor she found, tell her to try Stony Brook University. It is not too far from Commack and there are quite a lot of good cardiologists and surgeons there. My brother is actually travelling all the way from Penn. to get his surgery done there by a surgeon whose name escapes me at the moment, but I can find out for you.

Hope everything is going OK for you and Joe, and it looks like your daughter is following in your footsteps.

Well, here's the story

Well, here's the story

This is the latest story of what has happened to my daughter's mother-in-law.

I don't want to go into much personal detail about someone else, without permission, so I'll give some general info. on what has happened to this poor woman.

First of all, she is from another country in which the medical care is quite different than what we are used to getting. She is here visiting for several months with my daughter and her husband and she became very ill, coughing and unable to breath. She has a known heart valve problem, probably from rheumatic fever, and apparently has some arrythmia. So they thought her heart was acting up.

She has been admitted to the hospital. It seems that her valve problem is only mild to moderate, but she has a pulmonary problem. She has apparently been on Cordarone/Amiodarone for several years in her own country without much checking, and has become toxic. Both her lungs are scarred from it. She has no pneumonia, which was feared at first, but she in some big difficulty.

Hard to believe that she was on it for so long without anyone checking her, but here it is in black and white. I'm very sorry for her.
