A while back I joined this group and told you all about how my mom miraculously survived an aortic dissection...and I have MVP with mild thickening. Mom now has a pseudoaneurysm. Just trying to find info on how it could progress. She has never fully recovered from what she went through in Dec and will NOT get another surgery (her dr. agrees she wouldn't be a candidate).

I found this online:
A pseudoaneurysm, also termed a false aneurysm, is a leakage of blood from an artery into the surrounding tissue with persistent communication between the originating artery and the terminating blood filled cavity. The leakage can result from an artery being punctured during a diagnostic test such as a cardiac catheterization or an arteriogram, but may also occur in a surgical graft. Some pseudoaneurysms resolve themselves while others require repair to prevent hemorrhage, an uncontrolled leak, by ultrasound guided compression repair or thrombin injection, and even surgical treatment.

Thank you!

Regarding Pseudoaneurysms

Here is the definition from the Cedars-Sinai Thoracic Aortic Surgery Program web page, in the aortic disease section:

"A pseudoaneurysm is an aneurysm that does not have some or all of the aortic wall layers, often due to some injury to the inner aortic wall. They are also sometimes called false aneurysms. These aneurysms are more unpredictable, with a higher tendency to rupture at smaller sizes. Usually there is a greater inflammatory process involved in the surrounding tissue, which potentially can complicate a redo operation. Some pseudoaneurysms are the result of infection, which increases the risk of embolization and stroke. "

I am so sorry to hear that your Mother has developed this. Has she been evaluated at a major medical center by a surgeon that specializes in aortic disease?

Best Wishes,
Arlyss

hi gemini!
your description of "pseudoanuerysm" sounds like a description of joey's "fistula". the surgeon told us that it is an artery that was provoked during his ross procedure. it did not fully seal and is leaking minimally. it may seal up on its own, or it may_if it should progress at some point_ need to be cauterized and that can be done by cath.

i'm sorry that i'm not familiar with the term "pseudo anuerysm". hope somone else has more..

wishing you all the best, sylvia

Thank you all. That definition was most helpful.

Yes, her thoracic surgeon from her last surgery (he is just wonderful and a miracle maker in my eyes) evaluated her.

I'll keep you all updated. She is back in the hosp right now because her dialysis access clotted and she needs a new one.
