It's been almost 9 weeks since the AVR surgery and been recovery nicely. Have some irregular heart beats, unstable blood pressure, headaches and short term memory loss. Started drinking a few glasses of wine and had chest pains on the left side during the past week. Not sure what is causing the pain...the alcohol or the meds with the alcohol. I'm on metoprolol tartrate (Lopressor) 50mg 2X per day and wondering if I need to change to Toprol XL (metropolol succinate) or atenolol as another beta blocker for hypertension and high heart rate. I read that atenolol does not cross over the blood brain barrier so it has less side effects...actually was on atenolol before and did not have a problem with it. Heard that atenolol promotes diabetes which I am reluctant to use again because my blood glucose was recently at 122. Maybe all the beta blockers promote diabetes...can't seem to find a study to confirm. Don't know if I should go with another beta blocker, ACE inhibitor or other hypertension med. Any advice will help before I see my primary care and cardiologist in the next 2 weeks. Thanks for your response.
