It's been almost 9 weeks since the AVR surgery and been recovery nicely. Have some irregular heart beats, unstable blood pressure, headaches and short term memory loss. Started drinking a few glasses of wine and had chest pains on the left side during the past week. Not sure what is causing the pain...the alcohol or the meds with the alcohol. I'm on metoprolol tartrate (Lopressor) 50mg 2X per day and wondering if I need to change to Toprol XL (metropolol succinate) or atenolol as another beta blocker for hypertension and high heart rate. I read that atenolol does not cross over the blood brain barrier so it has less side effects...actually was on atenolol before and did not have a problem with it. Heard that atenolol promotes diabetes which I am reluctant to use again because my blood glucose was recently at 122. Maybe all the beta blockers promote diabetes...can't seem to find a study to confirm. Don't know if I should go with another beta blocker, ACE inhibitor or other hypertension med. Any advice will help before I see my primary care and cardiologist in the next 2 weeks. Thanks for your response.

haha i love your posts because you always have a little photo attached! it's great!

i can't help with the chest pain. kind of strange though.....normally you would think that alcohol would relax you so it can't be anxiety. for sure call your doctor tomorrow and find out what they think! i can't wait to drink my first long island iced tea since before surgery!

best wishes!

I just had a margarita and a beer last Sat. night (5 1/2 wks post op). Second time I've tried drinking since surgery... Both times I broke out into a cold sweat at the bar... Might be just me (sometimes I do that anyway - nervous from being around all the good-looking girls I think, lol). But I noticed it got better both times when I switched to water/diet coke. Didn't have the chest pains tho - so yea, get that check out Eric. Probably nothing, but be safe not sorry!

Thanks for Fixing My Avatar

Thanks for Fixing My Avatar

Thanks to whoever fixed my avatar. Been trying to fix that darn thing since I joined. I guess no one else has trubs with alcohol and the metoprolol tartrate...must be my chemistry. I'll try switching to metoprolol succinate (Toprol XL) and if that doesn't work move back to atenolol (Tenormin). Jackie, glad you like the pics...here's a relaxing one. Andy, i guess your drinks don't mix well with coumadin...you might have to plan on skipping a dose before you power drink again. Oh well life is not a bowl of cherries for OHS warriors! Stay healthy and be happy!

Aloha...Eric
