Dr. Stupid

Hi All,
I have just started Shotokan Karate (3 weeks) and have already passed my first grading. I used to be a black belt in Choi Kwang Do (early nineties - way before my AVR). Obviously I have to be careful during sparring sessions, and do not have to do these if I don't want to. But so far, I have won some "play" bouts on a points basis, drawn nil, lost nil.
I have to admit that I am really enjoying it. I think the reason I have rejoined the martial arts scene, knowing the dangers that may lay ahead is because of "the got to know factor". Besides which, it provides me with a certain mental discipline and drive to succeed that I can't get anywhere else.
Does anybody else do martial arts, or do you think I am off my rocker ?
Bestest regards
Paul

I don't know Paul, all I can say is be cautious. I don't know what all the forms are anymore, but what little I had of Tae Kwon Do, I can say that's out of the question.

Thanks Ross for your reply. I haven't tried Tae Kwon Do, but from what I have seen of it, I don't think I will bother. It seems to be very competition orientated. My Sensei knows my condition, and has said that he will not make me do anything that could prove a danger.

I haven't had sugery yet so I am not sure just how bad it would be, I taught Jiu Jitsiu for several years and I was always bruised, that was without being on anything. I don't know if the falls would impact the valve function (but you are in Shotokan so no problem there) but most anything else I wouldn't see a problem with. Just mention to your training partners what your condition is and make sure they have proper control. I worked out with one guy who had no control and he broke my nose twice. I would say go have fun. By the way I stopped because I moved to a different state and haven't found anyplace I am really comfortable. If you want to discuss it feel free to do it here or PM me.

Go and have fun.

I am a fellow Budoka. Took some time off when I had my aoric valve repaied at age 49, but I am getting back into again. I hold Dan ranks in Goju Ryu karate and Ju-jitsu. I also used to train with some Judo types, and will again someday. All of this was cleared by my doc. Taking Ukemi first time after surgery was a bit scarry, but nothing broke.

Hi friends,
I have just passed my one anniversary of double valve replacement and am feeling pretty well. I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do plus i also train in Filipino Martial Arts, Kali. We use sticks and wrestle and besides losing my wind easier i have had no problems. I teach TKD several days a week plus i spar with the kids and have had no issues. I get hit with the sticks, kicks and punches and really dont bruise that much. I am on Coumadin plus Metoprolol, Lisinipril and Lanoxin. I was very worried about the Coumadin issues with bleeding and bruising. Plus my profession is meat cutting so those issues were a concern but i have been really surprised its ok. Besides watching my diet Coumadin hasn't stopped me from doing anything. I am looking into supplements that i can take to help my muscles recover quicker and gain stregnth. I am trying to build my body up some and wanted a little help. If anyone has some info that us Valvers can take please let me know. As far as Martial arts i say go for it just realize your limitations and have fun. My Surgeon said it would be ok for me to spar and that meant that i might get kicked in the chest. He said my chest is probably stronger that it was before surgery. Mr Cardio isnt as excited about that though. Heck man you only live once, i dont want to miss out on anything. If i can do it i will, if i cant i'll try anyway, lol. The only way to fail is to attempt. :D Martial arts is a state of mind not body.

I was a PT nut when in the US Army, the valve event changed that. I have not been as aggressive with the weights but they are part of my daily routine. Pushups and burpees along with dips and pullups round out uppre body days for me now. Not one problem with the sternum but for a bar hitting directly on a wire (knot?) that caused some pain...
I box/strike/kick on the heavy and speed bags daily. Finish out with a 2-4 mile walk/run and 10+min of "chucks". My son was big into Jui Jitsu when we moved back home post US Army days, I tried it but just found that I was constantly bruised. I was not enjoying it.
Whatever you do, DO IT! Life is like the Nike commercial... JUST DO IT!

Maybe it's just me, but I do not see how you risk it in Tae Kwon do. Some of the stuff I did was modified with other forms of martial arts as it was to be applied to law enforcement, so you bet it was all contact with lots of untrained folks. If any of you are interested, here is link to my old instructor. Some of you may have met him already.
