Anyone like Maine Coon cats?
I brought home a new kitten Sunday night from a cat show at Texas A&M in College Station. He's a Maine Coon -- already weighs 7 pounds at only 4 months of age. His official name is Nascat Race4thecase of Zapzkatz. Breeder is a big NASCAR fan, so her cattery name is Nascat.

"Chaser" is the 2nd Maine Coon we've shared our home with. He'll live with us until he becomes a grand champion. After that, he's going Down Under --
to Australia.

Maine Coons are probably the largest breed of cat we recognize in Cat Fanciers Association. Some get to be 20+ pounds, and they're not fat, either. Just BIG cats ...

As soon as I can master my new and first digital camera, I'll post a photo. He's what's called a cameo tabby & white -- almost a pale cream or very very light reddish color where the markings are.

Marsha,
I'm highly allergic to cats, but this sounds like one, I would risk sneezing my head off for, just in order to see.

My Mom always wanted a Maine Coon. My friend has a huge cat that is part Maine Coon (and part Tiger, I think - this cat is huge!) I'd love to see pics if you have any you can post. (Not to mention that we've never seen pictures of your shaved Persians! :) )

I had a cat that big and he became a diabetic. :) He was really big framed and the vet said 18-20 lbs was not a bad weight for him. I love cats.....once had three at one time. (I know that's probably a drop in the bucket for you.) We now just have a cat that voluteered herself at our back door a few years ago. She's a siamese mix with a lot of white, blue eyes and a pink nose. Do you know any Balinese breeders? My big cat looked sort of like one of those. Lynx pointed and fluffier than a regular siamese. I miss him. He was my top pet.

Mary:

My husband's lived with cats all his life. We never thought he was allergic to them -- until we visited a friend who breeds Japanese Bobtails. Within 20 minutes his face was very swollen, eyes almost swelled shut. Was about 36-48 hours before he was back to normal. JBTs are one breed we will never have in our home.

Karlynn:

I shaved Rocky, the cream & white Persian, last night. Now that I have a digital camera, I will get photos of him. Pretty Girl, the 11YO Persian, likes to hunker down between the sheets of our bed all the time. I may have to let her hair grow out; she doesn't seem to like the AC unit being on 24/7.

CCRN:

Yes, I know some Balinese breeders. Where do you live?

Marsha,
I never realized I might be allergic to one breed but not to another. There are times when I walk into a house and after a few minutes, I l have trouble breathing and my eyes and nose both start to swell shut.
Then there are times when I only develop a runny nose when I'm around them.
Is there something unusual about a Japanese Bobtail that might explain why your husband suffered the reaction?
I really like cats, but I can't take a chance on getting near them. :(

We used to breed Siamese when I was a kid. But our favorite cat was Richie (Richard the Lion-Hearted) our Balinese. He was the sweetest, most cuddlie cat we ever had.

They are lovley cats Marsha. I am sure you will enjoy.

We have a Birman. She's 2 yrs. We are to be picking up our 2nd Birman kittnen in a few weeks. Another female.

What is your take on Female + Female in one household. Our vet highly recommends it. Though the breeder and a few others have said Female + Male makes a better arrangement.

Gina I don't know. If they had been sisters, that would one thing, but bringing in a new female may be quite an undertaking for awhile. Sooner or later, they'll become comfortable coexisting in the same house, but until that happens. Well.......... That's been my experience anyhow.

My sister lives in Olds, Alberta. That town is over run with Maine Coon cats. Almost every cat in that town is part Maine Coon. She has had a variety of Maine Coon cats over the past twenty years. The cool thing about these type of cats is that they love to talk. Homer was the most talkative cat she has had thus far. He was also her biggest one too. His head was massive. Homer would greet you every morning with a lengthy chirpy meow. If you chirped back at him he would keep on talking. Maine Coons are also excellent hunters. They can chirp like a bird. She had 3 Maine Coons at one time. They worked as a team to hunt down birds. Homer would scrunch down in the tall grass and chirp at a bird until it came close. Maxine and Cosmo would pounce out of nowhere and nab the curious bird. My sister has had to rescue many birds over the years, she has also found many bird parts hidden away in her house too. These cats also don't mind the water too much. Homer's favorite roosting spot was on top of Mar's big fish tank. He would lay down on the screen above the water and snooze until one day he jumped up there and the screen colasped into the tank. Both Homer and the fish had the shock of there lives. LOL. I myself have a Bombay cat. She is a petite little high strung cat. She looks identical to a black panther but is scared of her own shadow. Mar's cats were always so friendly and playful. They had the greatest personalities. I hope you get as much enjoyment from Nascar as Mar did with Homer. Maine Coons are such great cats. If I ever decide to get another cat I plan to get a Maine Coon from Olds. By the way, does your cat have a very long bushy tail? All of Mar's did. Massive heads, huge paws and long bushy tails. Homer weighed in at 21 lbs before he passed away, and he was never fat. Loved the outdoors too much to laze around and get fat. I think he got every female cat within a one mile radius pregnant before Marlene decided to get him fixed. If you drive around her neighborhood you can see a cat wandering around with Homers gray/brown tabby markings and proud bushy tail stuck straight up in the air. Mar has one of Homer's off spring. Baby Cakes. She is a a lot like Homer and loves to chat you up too, but unlike Homer, she perfers the indoors.

RCB that looks almost exactly like one I had that I called Cyndi. She/He? was all Yellow/Orange. Huge cat!

Pam:

I am working on getting a photo of:
(1) Rocky, the shaved-down Persian;
(2) Chaser, the Maine Coon kitten; and
(3) Tent City, a.k.a. Room 122, College Station TX La Quinta with 3 of the 6 cat tents my 2 roommates & I set up last weekend.

This is ALL Greek to me -- using a digital camera and getting the innards out onto the internet. I'm at my parents' house in Dallas right now and I just remarked to my dad -- a longtime photographer and member of the Dallas Camera Club -- that gee, it was all so easy when you bought a roll of film, shot the pictures, took it to the drug store, picked 'em up, put 'em in an envelope & mailed them across the country.
He said, "It's easy." Hah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll get the photos to y'all -- hopefully before it's time to shave Rocky down again. :D
