Hoping that someone who has gone through an upper GI can help. My daughter will be having an upper GI endoscopy tomorrow. They have her off Coumadin (since Sunday) and on Lovenox injections (which they have me give) My daughter is 15 and has truncus arteriosus and a mechanical truncal (aortic) valve St Jude. So the dosing is 1 mg/kg/dose. Dose every 12 hours. They are also going to put her on IV prophylaxis gentimicin and ampicillin. They plan on taking about 5 biopsies (very small pieces of tissues). My question is that this should be a low risk procedure without major bleeding, so why are the docs going full out like she is having brain or major abdominal surgery. Is all this using low molecular weight heparin necessary? why don't they just discontinue Coumadin for one day instead of for 3?

Martha (mom to Christina, IgA deficiency, Truncus Arteriosis, mechanical aortic (truncal valve) Endocarditis X2. (mom is a nervous wreck from giving painful Lovenox shots to unhappy teenager) :D

I not sure it will answer your question but you should read
the thread:

"Virtual Colonoscopy Anyone?"

Good luck to your daughter!

It takes about 2 days off warfarin for the INR to drop by about half. A one-day hold is usually not long enough. Feel very fortunate that her doctors are being very careful about managing her anticoagulation. She is getting the best care.

thank god for managing anitcoagulant

thank god for managing anitcoagulant

agree with what al said. read virtual colonoscopy thread. you will see what happened to my father because they took him off coumadin 4 days before a routine colonoscopy and did not use any type of bridge therapy.
