HELP,

When I go to the dentist I have to take clindamycin because I may be allergic to penicillin. Clindamycin gives me very painful gastroesohpageal reflux. I tried to take pepcid AC today an hour before I took the clindamycin , but it did not work. I was in pain the entire time I was at the dentist, and another couple of hours after I got home. My gag reflex is normally very strong and being in pain does not allow me to relax and decrease my gag reflex. At least the dental hygienist was sweat and did not even attempt to take x-rays today.

Anyone have any ideas.

Debbie, I take clindamycin because the other stuff messes w/ my stomach. I don't have an issue. Before I started using clindamycin, I'd have to pull over on the way to the dentist to throw up. Lots of fun.

Why don't you ask your pharmacist for suggestions? Sometimes you just have to experiment around and see which one you can stomach best. Have you tried erythromycin? (That's the one that did to me what clindamycin does to you.)

Karlynn,

Erythrmycin use to make me sick as a dog also. I tried not eating, eating a small amount, and eating a lot of food. It did not matter. I stayed nauseated for most of the day. Sometimes, I would also throw up everything I ate.

P.J.

Most doctors will not prescribe most of the other medications on the list if you are allergic to penicillin because if you are allergic to penicillin, you may also be allergic to those also. I plan on talking to the pharmacist also. I figured with this large group of folks, someone may have experienced a good solution.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Debbie

I take cephalexin (Keflex) for my dental procedures because I am allergic to almost everything else. Unless you have had reactions to penicillin (and you say you MAY be allergic so I don't know exactly what that means), you should be fine with Keflex. The only problem I have occasionally with Keflex is diarrhea (sp?) and that is solved by eating yoghurt.

I learn somthing new on here everyday, so yoghurt stops diarrhea does it?

I am not sure if it stops it for every reason but it does for antibiotic caused diarrhea. Apparently the Keflex (and maybe other types as well) kills some of the "good" bacteria in the gut and the active cultures in yoghurt solves the problem.
