I thought I'd share another story of me "connecting" with my students. This is not a heart patient student, but a blood disorder student.
I had my students share what they did over the summer. When this student said that she had spent some time in the hospital because of a blood disorder, i got currious, but didn't want to ask her in front of all the others, so not to embarass her. Today I got the chance to talk to her. I forget what she said the disease is called, but essentially, she doesn't produce enough platelets, so she does not clot easily. She said that the smallest bumps cause huge bruises. I told her that I too had that problem, but mine was due to medication I had to take. We then went on to lament about hospitals, IVs, and bruising. While we were talking my student with the heart problems (who hates to tell new people about her heart) joined the conversation and began sharing her experience in hosptials. Perhaps the two of them will feel as if they have something in common and become friends??? Or at least realize they are not completely alone in dealing with "unusual" health concerns at such a young age. I hope that my talking with them has helped them in some way.
Just wanted to share...
