I was just wondering if there was anything I should know about my choices (?) of anesthesia for my upcoming surgery.

I had a breast biopsy in January and they said I got the shakes and then nauseous. I don't remember the shakes at all (but it sounds like I was a bit crabby to them!), and the nausea was very mild and instantly relieved with a half dose of whatever they prescribed (the nurses suggestion, half dose usually does it, then they let you go home sooner because you're not so drugged). I got a copy of those surgical reports and can't make heads or tails of them. Do I even need to bother? I mean, this is an entirely different situation. Isn't it?

All stories and opinions welcome! Thank you!!

When you go to pre-admission at the hospital, you will be interviewed by someone from anesthesia area.

Marguerite,
It's important to keep track of these things. I would take the surgical notes from the biopsy with you to discuss with the anesthesiologist. You are right, the anesthesia is probably different but they do want to know about past reactions to anesthesia and the notes will give them the information.

Post-surgery, morphine is usually given. While there is considerable general malaise that lingers from the anesthesia, patient-controlled Fentanyl generally causes less nausea, dopiness, and painkiller-induced constipation than morphine. I used it, and felt it was far better. I was lucid and, uh, functional. I suggest you consider it. If you decide to use it, you should ask up front, as they may have to prepare it.

Best wishes,

Great advice, thanks. I will take my notes with me, Gina. And I've written Fentanyl across the top in red with question marks!! Thanks, Bob.
