i have been taking a course of the antibiotic amoxycillin for the last four days and my guess is it is the cause of my inr dropping from 3.5 to 2.6. ( for a sore throat )

does that sound right?

I know that whenever I have to have dental clean-ups and/or dental work, I have to take amoxycillin & it will inevitably mess with my INR.

So yes, I think this antibiotic, along with many other, will affect your INR.

Ive learned through my experience of amoxycillin i for myself
have to increase abit on my warfarin weekly doseage as i take
it and this works for me,otherwise i drop also in inr, then when finished
the pinicillin i return to my norm dose of weekly warfarin

I went back and checked my INR log. I take 2000mg(4 tabs)Amoxycillin every six month prior to dental cleaning. That short burst of antibiotic does not seem to affect my INR. However, I was on 2000mg/day Penicillin VK for a week, for a dental infection recently, and it did affect my INR similar to what happened to you. I went from 3.5 to 2.6. As soon as I discontinued to antibiotic my INR went back to the mid 3s. A regimen of antibiotics does seem to affect INR for me and I watch my INR a little closer while on the antibiotic.

I checked www.coumadin.com and www.warfarinfo.com, and neither indicated that amoxi itself will affect the INR either way. The prescribing leaflet at coumadin.com does list antibiotics, in general, as possibly affecting the INR either way.

I take massive doses of amoxi for cat bites. Was bitten badly on July 4 while shaving down one of my Persians, and took approximately 8,000 over 2-3 days. I had tested on 7/1 and my INR was 4.4; I had decreased my dosage at that time from 6.5X4 + 6mgX3 to 5.5X4 + 6.0X3 and my INR was 3.0 on 7/9. My guess is the decrease was the sole result of adjusting my dosage, rather than the huge amount of amoxi.

BTW, my hand is much better now. I had posted here about the bite, that it hit what I think is the radial nerve from my wrist to my thumb. Feeling is slowly returning. Bite barely missed an artery. That would have been interesting!

Your drop in INR could be the result of the infection causing the sore throat. My PCP avoids Rxing amoxi for sore throats with me; there are more effective meds out there, he says, and I agree. I keep amoxi on hand for my cats, but my vet usually Rxes veterinary forms of Cipro or Augmentin instead for general infections, and I have dealt with a cat having a sore throat once or twice.

in new zealand, all medicines (on the government approved schedule) are free. the government body which selects the drugs is very cost driven and limits choice and nearly always goes for generic forms when possible.

so probably my doctor has very little choice but to prescribe amoxycillin for sore throats regardless of what else is available. it is possible to apply for a dispensation from the health department when something special is really needed but the red tape is avoided if possible.

of course we can buy non government approved drugs at full price, like aldara the skin cancer drug at nz$150 per pack, but almost no one would pay retail for a drug when you can get a similar drug for free.

My PCP Rxes generics. (Many insurance companies or plans here in the U.S. won't fille a TM drug unless you pay extra $ or you have to try generic forms first; if those don't work, you move up the ladder of tiers of drugs.)

Years ago, I had a bad sore throat and instead of asking for an appointment, I asked if my doctor's nurse could call in an Rx to the drugstore. She called in amoxi. Two days later, my throat was worse and I saw my doctor. He was surprised that I had been Rxed amoxi. I think he switched me to erythromycin. I also got a shot.

I usually don't get sore throats for more than 24-36 hours. When I do, it often develops into bronchitis ...

Take care of that sore throat .....
