Morning fellow valvers..I go to see my PCP today. First time since surgery. I am going to ask for Flu shot:p :p Never had one....Also, I have an appointment with my Dentist this Monday. She said for me to ask him for Amox 500 and take 4 ..one hour before I come..Guess she will clean since I am really bleeding from gums. I admit, have not had a cleaning in long time:eek:   Bad, bad, me. My big question ..Al, you around,..will the Amox 500 change my INR. I plan to take mine this weekend and again after I see the dentist..to see if there is a change. Bonnie:)

Hi B

Tyce had the same question when he went to our dentist. Our cardio nurse said NOPE---they've not found amoxicillin to be a problem......HAPPY CLEANING!!

For the past 3 years I've had my teeth cleaned every three months due to being radiated for Head & Neck Cancer and having no saliva as a result of the radiation killing my salivary glands. (Saliva plays a major role in preventing cavities.) I take 4 Amox 500 ( which is now the normal dose) one hour before each cleaning. I have never had a problem with my INR due to the Amox. A couple of years ago, the recommended Amox protocol was to take it before and after cleaning. Again, I never had any problem.

thanks Bob

I'm just scared I will start bleeding heavy from coumadin:p :p When she probes? Bonnie

Hi Bonnie

I religiously go for my cleanings every 6 months. Though, I could brush my teeth 3 times a day and they still find something wrong at least once a year. Must be that old age setting in. LOL.

Last month I went for my check up and they noted I had a cracked tooth with decay. Maybe something my former dentist did not catch? Makes you wonder. Anyway, they said possible root canal. The dentist proceeded to prep for a crown and decided not to do the canal. 5 Days later it blew up and I ended up back in the chair for the canal.Talk about pain!

I have been on Amoxicillin many of times with minimal concerns. I did note that my INR tends to decrease a bit. Have it checked 3-4 days afterwards until you learn what works best for you.

Also, since I took Amoxicllin for my premeds this time. They also put me on it as a precautionary for the next week. When I return to the dentist next week. I will premed with another family of antibiotics. As I understand, if you are already on something or have been on long term antibiotics for another reason....you need to switch to another family of drugs because your body will build up temporary resistance. Hope I have not lost you.

Good Luck.

Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin

Hey Bonnie,

Yes, I do 2000mg total (4 horse pills) of Amoxicillin 1 hour prior to dental work. I have heard it slightly alters the INR, but I haven't worried about that too much. The main thing is to be certain you're safe from any potential infection caused by the procedures. I don't schedule my procedures any less than a month or two apart, so the affects of the Amoxicillin are not a worry (for INR, etc).

I've had two cleanings this year and didn't bleed bad at all.

My dentist's receptionist always confirms if I "pre-medicated" before I come in. That's comforting. Just had some pre-crown build-up work done yesterday.

I feel fine and don't plan to worry about or even check my protime until my next necessary appointment.

Have fun!

Don't worry about that. If you were having oral surgery, that's a whole different ball game, but routine cleaning, fillings, ect. are no big deal.

I am the Dental Professional as far as fillings go. My mouth is all silver and I often wonder if I wouldn't be better of with dentures.

Have had a crown and filling replaced since my surgery; just did the 4 x 500 mg Amoxicillin one hour before. No problems with bleeding, or my INR.

I am an old pro when it comes to being medicated before cleaning or any dental procedure. I had penicilin injections when I was a kid with the heart murmur. Yeah, and then years later, amoxicilin had been used in various doses. I recently had problems with amox, because of the use over time. My new pcp knows of what can be used in place of. Have to prevent encarditis and other infections. Please be good to your teeth. I was surprised that it had been a long time since you had been to the dentist. My surgeon insisted that I had a clean bill of health of the mouth before he would perform surgery. At least everything went fine and you are doing better. Just keep yourself healthy now. We love seeing you here. Take care

Check out Al Lodwick

Check out Al Lodwick

Hi Bonnie:

You might want to check out Al Lodwick's comments, "Recommendations for Dental Procedures WhileTaking Warfarin." at warfarinfo.com

Actually, his whole book, which can be read on the net or purchased from him is full of useful information for most types of events. When we have questions, it's always the first source we check. Hubby just had some deep scaling last Thursday and had minimal bleeding. With respect to INR, people do vary. Hubby's INR tends to go up .5 to .8 with antibiotics for a day or two, then returns to where it was before the antibiotics.

Anybody allergic to the penicilin family??? I am and just wonding what anyone else took if they are allergic to it. I am also allergic to erithmycin(spelling???)!!! I get my teeth cleaned regullary and it is time, but I am going to wait since it has only been 5 weeks post op. I wish I had known before the surgery to get my teeth cleaned but didn't even think about it !!!!

Teeth Cleaned

I only had 3 days to get ready for OHS..Thy found an aneurysm..I had just gone thru some terribly painful peridonal surgery..   a few years back and had 4 front teeth capped due to getting long in the tooth:D :D :D a year or so back..so yes, I am sorry to say it's been awhile..but I will make sure the new Dentist is aware of my situation..I have had some gum bleeding at night while I'm sleeping..so must do something. Maybe she can give me a rinse. ect..I took my INR today...3.7...drank a V8 juice and will eat some cabbage tonight to get it down before Mon. Will test again at end of next week..Bonnie..Thank Goodness for Protime:) :) :) :)

Hi Bonnie,

I make it a point to have my teeth cleaned three times a year minimum. If you have had peridontal problems in the past it's really important to avoid recurrence. Any bleeding of gums should indicate a problem. I'm glad you're checking it out. We 'valvies' need to take extra precautions to keep our gums healthy!

Faye, I too am allergic to the 'cillins and such.

I can take erythromycin but they are not using it as much these days due to side effects in most.

I have been taking CLINDAMYCIN before dental work. I picked up the need to get teeth in order from this website.

Interestingly, my cardio had not ordered any antibiotics prior to my heart cath in August--I refused to let the hospital continue to prep me for that till they got an order for the antibiotics. My surgeon just laughed it off with "you are more likely to get a bug from dental work than a heart cath" Anyway, that was my experience.

Hi Bonny
No idea about your INR. You know me, I am a non-coumadiner.

I remember the days when I had to be on amox or penicillin for 10 days when I had a teeth cleaning or anything. That was back when I was a kid. I had braces, too. Can't believe I am not immune to Amox or any other anti-biotic.
Now it is so much easier to take the 4 biggies and get it over with.

Happy tooth cleaning.

Ross-- maybe you should have stopped brushing with a hot fudge sundae. Ha ha.
Us youngsters are lucky to have grown up with floridated water and floride treatments.

Bleeding & Dental work

Bleeding & Dental work

Bonnie,

My sister-in-law is my dentist's assistant. I always seem to manage to bleed on them at some point every time I am in there. It always bothers me more than it does them.
By the way have you ever taken Cleocin for your dental work?
I am highly allergic to Penicillin so I have to take something that is not related to any form of Penicillin. I take Cleocin because you only need 300mg an hour before any dental procedure and you get the same bacterial coverage that you get with Amoxicillin.

Hi Bonnie,

I guess Amox is the protocal for Dental Work - It is what I take also. I don't have a big problem with my gums bleeding but I'm sure if the dentist is aware they will take the necessary precautions. It's just one one of those thangs (going to the dentist) that no one looks forward to. Unless their a glutton for punishment - ummm might have a few on the website...LOL.

Good Luck with your Dentist visit. It is time for a cleaning for me too - oh maybe next year. I had a crown last year that I think may need a Root Canal real soon.

Gina - How was that experience?? Did you have to come off Coumadin for that??

Bonnie - Will be up your way Saturday visiting my best friend in or near Cleveland, Tn. They just built a house in the country on 10 acres. She says it is so peaceful and beautiful there.

You don't mean Cleveland, Ga. do you? I am 10 miles from there..but there is a Cleveland, Tenn. Leaves are just beginning to turn...BonnieP.S. I am such a whoosey about going to Dentist today..Will take my 4 500mg. Amox at 1 p.m. wear my valve replacement tee shirt..Take a copy of Al's page on why you shouldn't get off coumadin, I'm loaded with info before she touches me. LOL:D :D Don't want to bleed all over her..Hoping she can give me a mouthwash with some type of antibotic..to rinse with. John had a bottle last year. I brush 5 times a day. Have some pearly white. Don't know why I'm bleeding other than coumadin. Well, we'll see. Bonnie

Don't feel bad Bonnie, I hadn't been to the dentist for years myself, mostly because I didn't have dental insurance and couldn't afford it. I only found out about my MVP a year ago, and the cardio told me at that point that I should have antibiotics before any dental work, I probably should have for years, but was unaware of the problem.

My dentist said to get a refillable prescription from my PCP, so that I can just pick them up at the pharmacy anytime I'm having dental work done.

He gave me a prescription for Principen. I just did a search and it's generic name is Ampicillin. I'm not sure what the difference is between that and Amoxicillin. I also take 4 500 mg one hour before a procedure.

I never went to the dentist while I was on Coumadin, but if you're trying to lower your INR, broccoli always worked wonders for me.
