Am I heading for a 3rd OHS?

Dear all,

I am 32, male, from Istanbul, Turkey

I had an OHS in jan. 1998 ..at that time, my bicuspid aortic valve was tried to be repaired....which took me around 5 years ... in Sept. 2002, I had my aortic valve replaced with a medtronic mechanical valve (21) ... I was feeling so great for the next 18 months after my AVR .. however, since march things seem to chance slowly.... I sometimes accuse myself thinking maybe I pushed so hard at the gym (although I did not do anything excessive) but whatever the reason is, my valve seems to get limited in opening .. may 2004 echo showed an estimated opening area of 1.0 cm2 and the one I had last week showed 0.8... aortic gradiend was 30(aver.) and 50 (max) in may, and now it is 60 in max .. this is the result that I got from my cardio last week .. I also had another echo done right after that which showed a result of 30(avr.) and 50 (max) ... which seems to be the same as the may 2004 echo .. (this one did not show any valve area measurement) ...

both echos I had last week show normal hear functions... but the second one indicates increased thickening in intraventricular septum to 13.4 (normal 9-11)

My cardiologist said he wants me to meet my surgeon .. I will meet with him on 27th.. he also said that this is not the situation expected from my valve ..which also dissapoins me a lot .. I remember a thread here about a friend (RobNYC) who had 100 gradient maximum in an echo test ..(with the same size "21" valve) but the result he got in cath was 50 in maximum so his planned OHS were cancelled ... I try to think in a positive way and hope that my echo result is also showing more than the actual situation ..

I am not symptomatic ...can walk with a speed of 5.6 - 6.0 km for an hour in cardio .. but I also feel that I am not as good as I was last year ..I dont know whether this is psycological or because of the stenosis... but really dissapointed to see the decreasing level of function of my valve ...

while waiting to see my surgeon in a couple of days, maybe it is too early but as the worst case scenario, I am trying to prepare myself for a possible 3rd surgery since the valve opening area seem at a very critical level,

I have seen many friends here who had more than 2 OHS's .. their words/experiences really give me strenght for another possible war to come with destiny ..

Hello Tarikemre,

You may want to ask your cardiologist about having a TEE (TransEsophageal Echogram) which gives better 'pictures' than the standard echo cardiogram.

Another test is better than a premature (3rd) surgery!

I hope you can get come 'clearer' answers about your condition.

Hi Tarikemre,

I'm so sorry to hear that your situation with your new valve is so uncertain. I hope further tests show better results but if not you know how well so many of our members have done with additional surgeries.

I will be watching for more posts from you and keeping you in my prayers in the interim.

Thanks Al!

I will mention about TEE and ask for one .. of course I will not go for the 3rd unless I am certainly convinced that it is necessary,

I'm so sorry to hear that...........

I'm so sorry to hear that...........

you may have to undergo surgery again. WE will certainly keep you in our prayers that this just isn't the case. If you do receive the unwelcome news that you must face the knife again, then please try to remember that others here have had to endure multiple surgeries and have lived to brag about it. I know this doesn't really make it any easier, but hopefully this will provide you with a wee bit of comfort and lots of hope.

Sending hugs and prayers and please let us know what you find out.

I don't hold alot of stock in echo measurements. I'd certainly want at least a catheterization and perhaps a TEE to confirm those figures. Testing is no fun, but it sure beats a 3rd surgery any day!

Dear All, thanks a lot for your support.. I got some good news today after a TEE ..as my cardiologist told me after the test, my valve opening area seems larger than it was measured (0.8) in the regular echo and the valve seems to be operating fine .. so another operation is not necessary for now ..!! I will get the detailed results in a couple of days ..but for the moment it is such a big relief for me ! once again, thank you all very much !!

with love from Istanbul!

Morning, Tarik - I recognized your name the moment I saw it and remember you from some time ago. welcome back. I am sorry you have been going through so much emotional turmoil regarding your valve. Perhaps you can rest a bit easier now that you have had some good news. It is always good for us all when we hear that one of our heart friends is going to be ok, at least for the time being. We all will take care of tomorrow's troubles when tomorrow comes, won't we.

Isn't this a wonderful site for information and support.

Glad to hear from you.

Ann

Great news Tarik! I know you must be feeling so relieved. :)

Tarik,

What a relief this must be. I hope the detailed news from your TEE is as encouraging as the early results. It's hard to go through a scare again after you hope your surgeries are all behind you.

Best wishes,

Tarikemre,

So happy to hear of your TEE results.

It seems so many of us have had misleading ECHOs' that I wonder why they do them.

They cause fright, anxiety and in my case, complete panic!

I had an ECHO again this year and even tho it came out OK, I don't trust it and wonder why I did it.

So glad you had the TEE with better results.

Donna

I'm one of them!

I'm one of them!

Hi Tarik, I've just read your posts and I know how you feel about the whole issue. I've already been through three MVR(replacements) and knowing there will be a fourth one sooner or later isn't exactly the best feeling I've ever experienced, but I've kind of got to accept it since there's no way out. I'm happy you won't be needing surgery for the time being which will give you plenty of time to get emotionally prepared for it when and if the time comes. Take good care of yourslef and make sure you don't overdo it.
