For those of us taking this drug, does this statement bother you as much as it does me?

"In rats, spironolactone has been found to increase the risk of tumors. It is not known if spironolactone increases the chance of tumors in humans." :(

Just started on this drug 2 weeks ago...and it doesn't seem to work too well for me. Yes, the statement is worrisome, but I wonder how much they gave the rats?!? I haven't been moved to dig any farther into it so I guess I'm either lazy, or to answer your question, it doesn't bother me that much.

Your probably right Johnny, but I seem to have no trouble coming up with new stuff all the time, so this kind of gets under my skin.

It would definitely bother me if I was a rat. But I think this rat has bigger problems. :D But seriously, that drug has been out a long time...seems they would have some good statistical analysis on whether or not it causes tumors in humans.

I've been on spironolactone for literally YEARS and it doesn't bother me.

Spironolactone is a "mild" diuretic that I take in conjunction with furosemide (lasix) to keep the water weight off. The spironolactone doesn't really do much for emptying fluids, but it does a LOT fo helping me retain potassium I would otherwise lose because of the lasix. I've missed doses of spironolactone before and BOY does it make a difference...

Owwie cramps!!!!

There is the pesky brest enlargment issue. I've got pre-pubesant breasts and they can be VERY tender at times, but the trade-off (early on at least) can be massive muscle cramps in my calves that will jolt me out of bed at night, cramps that form a right angle divet in the back of my lower leg. It can be bad all over the place...

I'll stick to the spironolactone thankyouverymuch.

Oh, it increases sun sensitivity too so watch that sunscreen in the summer! I carry a bottle of it with me while I'm out shooting for the paper or out with my family for whatever reason, lather up every two hours or so.

I've had a few knarly burns on odd places like my feet between the straps of my sandals... You can still see a dark patch on my right foot from the first summer I was on the stuff.

Potassium Sparing

Potassium Sparing

Harpoon - I hope you're right about the potassium-sparing aspects, because that's why I was put on it. I'm awaiting lab results at this very moment, in fact. Torsemide / Zaroxolyn combo had me up to 80 MEQ of potassium a day  . Cardio says "whooaa Nellie....let's try something else."

Thanks for the caution on the sun exposure - I'd missed that one, and I'm quite the fair-skinned (former) red-head  I was cautioned about the breast enlargement and pain side effects, but so far, neither have shown up.

The suggested link to reduced mortality in CHF folk would certainly be welcome, as I'm convinced I'm borderline. My doc continually says it would be a "stretch" to say I'm a CHF sufferer. All I know is I feel like crap within about 3 days if I get my sodium/diuretics out of whack.

Ross - I don't think you said - how is it working for you?

It's holding my potassium level up as it should. I'm on it, Zaroxylyn and Lasix. I was just troubled about the tumorogenic thing.

Ummm... Yeah, the pre-pubescent breast thing takes a little gettign used to...

That and the rounder than it should be tummy (I'm working on getting the weight off, really I am!) make my profile inthe mirror a bit.... Peculiar...

My wife's very good at pointing it all out to me every chance she gets.

I think I'm usually pretty good in the potassium area. I haven't been checked for that in a long time, but I only rarely have the cramps I used to get because my potassium levels were off.

Usually if I miss the lasix I'll start feeling it within a few hours. Depends on how much I've been drinking at the time (not booze!)

I was in CHF before VR, that went away and hasn't been back post-op.
