This morning, former Vice President and 2000 Democratic Presidential nominee Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on climate change. Gore will share the award with the United Nations Panel on Climate Change. The Nobel Committee said that Al Gore was the, "Single individual" responsible for convincing world government's that climate change was real, caused by human activity, and posed a threat to society."

?We face a true planetary emergency,? Mr. Gore said in his statement. ?The climate crisis is not a political issue; it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity. It is also our greatest opportunity to lift global consciousness to a higher level.?

?The message that it sends is that the Nobel Prize committee realized the value of knowledge in tackling the problem of climate change and the fact that the I.P.C.C. has an established record of producing knowledge and an impartial and objective assessment of climate change,? he said

Dr. Pachauri said he thought the award would now settle the scientific debate on climate change and that governments would now take action.

I am just not entirely sure what Global Warming has to do with the Nobel Peace Prize.

I have to say that I thought that as well. Not that I disagree, I don't know enough to disagree - just wish I'd hear an explanation as to why. Seems like it would be more within the Science arena.

However, congratulations to Fmr. Vice Pres. Al Gore and his family.

Well, besides the fact that the whole world is currently adding to the problem and needs to be brought to terms of understanding the level of their individual impact and made accountable to promising to implement changes. There's this. IF the planet continues to warm at a dramatic pace and we do not make any efforts to counteract the problems we have set in motion, the first to feel the impact may very well be the third world countries on whom the bizarre weather patterns can create further destitution (drought, monsoons, "perfect storms, etc)......this can create unrest. Bitter factions may arise as the division between the haves and have-nots continues to intensify. There will be a massive exodus from sticken lands to safer havens. That will occur across the globe, crossing political lines...... We really need to get ahead of the curve on this and get all countries working together.

And as he stressed....this is more than just a political or scientific challenge....it's a chance to be bound together as one humanity working to protect the place we call home. It's imperative. We need to work together on this.

I think the fact the Gore went around of his own volition, addressing multitudes of people, gathering information, using his position and connections to bring together indisputable evidence for the planet we ALL SHARE in a deliberate and non-confrontational way...... what's to wonder.....

Sorry but your never going to get the third world countries to cooperate. Wishful thinking, but nothing more.

I have to say that Cooker and I merit the Nobel about as much as does Al Gore. :p The level of scientific proof is roughly the same.

I say this not out of political motive but simply because the global warming debate has two sides, and Gore and his followers refuse to debate the evidence.

(Oh heck, let me revise this: I sound way too harsh. I really do believe that the media are not fairly weighing both sides of this case. But to many people, Al Gore is a hero for pressing his side of the issue so hard. So congrats to him and his family and fans. But I hope we will eventually take a careful look at ALL the evidence.)

Cooker and Bob are much more deserving of this award, IMHO :D
