I flew from Dallas-Fort Worth to Houston this evening to visit a cousin.
Figured it was cheaper to fly ($118 w/ tax) than 2 tanks of gas + wear & tear on my car + 10 hours on the road.
And then we had the problems this week of the arrests of suspected terror plotters.

I've flown a lot since 1990, mostly with cats, and was expecting the worst today. It really wasn't too bad going through security. I had already removed 4 bottles of Rx eyedrops from m
y purse and left them in my desk @ work. I checked my rolling suitcase, took my purse & laptop in cabin.
My flight was at 8 p.m., but I didn't know how much extra time would be needed. So John picked me up when I got off @ 4 p.m. and drove me to DFW. Got there about 4:50 at the latest. Got my boarding pass, checked 1 bag in no time.
I had no problem going through security, it was just a little slower. Seemed that the TSA agents were spending more time looking at screens as your bags went through the machines. There was an extra walk-through security device (I think made by GE) that gave little puffs of air, but not everyone was directed through it.
Lots of bottled drinks left in the gate waiting areas -- wonder why? since you can't take beverages on flights right now.
Had to take off my jacket as my boarding pass was scanned. Then about 1/3 - 1/2 of the passengers were pulled aside and TSA agents went through all their possessions. I was directed to go onto the jet.
Lots of overhead bin space available since nearly everyone is checking what would have gone up there. There were only 2 small pieces of luggage in the bin over my row (my laptop & one other similar-sized piece), so they shifted during the flight.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Here in the UK we are being told that we cannot take any electrical items on board, even laptops have to be packed in your checked in bags ( I intended buying a lap top to take on my next US Trip ( Sept but do not think I will bother as I worry that it may be damaged in the hold )

We have also been advised that we cannot take any liquid onto any US flight and that includes tootpaste,

Any newspaper or book we take into the cabin has to be purchased in the airport ( after we have been through security )

We have to have our essential carry on items in a clear plastic bag and the only items allowed are passports, travel documents, wallet and prescription medication ( tablets not liquid medicine ) spectacles but not in a case.

Everyone here seems to be OK with the new rules Thursday was a difficult day as folk were turning up at the airport and were then told no carry on luggage, so that caused some confusion, but now we know the rules I assume most people will be more organised.

I mean safety is for everyones benefit

Two of my children are in Hawaii, leaving early tomorrow. I have left a message on their cell not to try to bring any liquids on board and to check with their airline. I have no idea of the affect this has on Pacific travel, however, I expect it is the same everywhere, don't you think? They have a direct flight from Hawaii to Tampa.

I talked with a friend who is visiting in Kansas City (drove there from Louisiana). She mentioned that a mutual acquaintance had flown back to the US (San Antonio TX) from South Africa, making 2 stops en route, with 3 bags, 2 of which were in cargo. Got home, repacked, then flew to California on Friday. Checked her 1 piece of luggage (took her briefcase in cabin). Her luggage was lost. Dunno if airline had found her luggage yet.
Because more bags are being checked right now, the ground crews have more to keep up with than usual.

Glad to hear that it wasn't too too bad. With our son and his girlfriend, and soon our granddaughter in KC, it's cheaper to fly. Takes less than 1.5 hours, costs ~$167 (saw it at $93 last week) round trip. Otherwise it's an 8.5 hour drive. And I HATE driving long distances.

glad things aren't too bad.. better safe... figures though, I haven't flown since I moved back from Dallas, and now that I plan to fly there in october, all this happens.. i'm not the biggest fan of flying, but I try not to let that fear control my life.. guess i'll just see how things pan out... I may just end up rescheduling my vac for next spring - who knows..

Marsha,

How old were you when they discovered your ASD, did you get it re-
paired right away? I'm curious because I have an ASD, and at 53 I'm
wondering if I'll ever get it repaired.
