Thanks so much, everyone! I feel much better about the remaining wait :) Most of the time I am able to put my full confidence in the skills of my surgical team, and only look forward to start recovering, but there are of course times I worry as well. One thing that concerns me a little is waking with the vent tube and my sensitive gag reflex. I will mention this during pre-op to the anesthesiologist. The wait during surgery will be tough for my parents, and I don't know what, if any, information will be available to them until it's all done. I will also ask about this.

Marguerite: I already got my mini-bottle of hand sanitizer a couple of days ago

Johan: It is very good to hear from you and that all is going well, and thanks for sending thoughts and spirits my way!

ahh - the wait...

Until now the days have passed quickly, but I feel they are slowing down one by one, and I still have a week left to wait. Everything is going well, double-checked with the surgeon both that my On-X aortic valve is ready, and how to take my medications pre-surgery. Now I mostly worried about catching a bug and getting sick, or the hospital having to postpone my surgery. Maybe not a big deal, but when you have your mind set on such an important day, you don't want unscheduled delays. Besides, my parents have flown in cross Atlantic, a friend is flying in from CA to be there and support my parents in case of any unforeseen language or other problems. My medical leave is all set. The only todo item is I have not yet created a short-term disability claim, and pre-op Monday in one week, the day before surgery.

Crossing my fingers, keeping busy, and waiting :)

keeping busy during the wait is the worst, believe me i know
i'm sure most here will agree to waiting the worst.

Sounds like you are real ready to and sending you the best with everything, wish i could say the week would go fast but seems closer it gets the slower it is,.......been there done that.
stay busy as can and a new day closer to another day and FINALLY soon it's
over and we wonder why the heck we thought it took so long.
Really the week will go fast, but cus your waiting to get this over with, course it will drag for you.At least it's only a week not a month, that could be worse;)

Yes, the waiting is nerveracking. And it is possible that any of those postponements could occur. But really, they don't very often. Staying healthy was a real anxiety thing for me as well. I became somewhat anal about washing my hands, not touching doorknobs and handrails anywhere, etc. etc.. One habit I took on and still practice today (3 years out) is to keep a tiny bottle of Purel in my car (or bicycle pack...do I remember that you are a cyclist?) EVERY time I come out of the grocery store where I've used a cart, I use some. Those cart handles are nasty!

You certainly sound very calm and determined and that is a wonderful place to be! It's lovely that your family will be close. All is well!!

Good luck. Visit here as much as you need to while you journey through this week.

Best wishes

Marguerite

Yes, the waiting is the hardest part... sounds like you are well-prepared, and how wonderful to have family by your side. Keeping busy is the best thing you can do. Best wishes to you.

I think we all agree the wait is the worst.

My wonderful cardio used to call me from time to time during the month I waited and when he asked how it was going, I told him it was a cross between torture, hysteria and terror, for me.

But, we all manage one way or another, we get through it and get on with our surgeries, and you will, as well.

Sending you wishes for calm and peace and the most successful surgery.

I recall I felt just like this in the weeks leading up to the op, and then suddenly without trying I found a little calm corner in my brain to sit in while waiting out the last few days. I hope you do too! (I also became obsessed with washing my hands after touching door handles etc!) Thinking of you and wishing you well.

Hi Karl
The wait for me was terrible and I caught a cold like virus 10 days before the operation. I was treated aggresively for the infection as nobody wanted to postpone my July 1 appontment with the knife. The opeartion went smoothly (AVR, bovine pericardium and one CABG with vein from leg). Removal of the vent and drainage tubes was done by surgeon himself as he promised me. Was not so bad at all! I came home after 8 days last Thursday and am making steady progress. All the above just set your mind at rest and to assure you that I am thinking of you and sending some spirits from our side of the world to join all the others looking after you and guiding your surgecal team. Johan

So happy to hear you are safely over the mountain, Karl. Sounds like your bumps have been relatively small and that is good news. Take it slow....

Glad you're back in the land of VR. There seems to be a problem with the dates on your posts - July 14, 2000? I thought someone had revived an old thread, then the questions/answers weren't making sense and it had me confused. Finally made it to the end and figured it out!
