My son (23) had OHS to repair his mitral valve on January 7th, 2011. So its been about 8 months. He last visit to the cardiologist was I believe in April or May. He said they didn't talk to him about another visit. What is the norm?
Today his heart rate, which was fast after surgery due to A-fib, increased from his normal 70 or so to around 110bpm. I am concerned and would like him to call the cardiologist, but he says he is not worried about it and will call tomorrow if it is still fast. He is going into work tonight (he works in a bakery) and I am worried.
He is not on any meds at all.
Thanks for any help.

Your son should get a checkup and visit his cardiologist once a year, just to stay on top of things. Don't be afraid to pick up the phone and call the doctor if you're concerns with his fast heart rate. Better to be safe than sorry.

Darlene:

I would advise starting out with annual cardiology visits and let the cardio determine intervals after a few visits.

My husband had MV repair 4 years ago to repair chordae ruptured during a car accident 17 months previous. His surgeon saw him at 1 year and he has had annual cardiologiist checkups. So far, so good.
John isn't on any heart meds.. BP & cholesterol both perfect. He did have to take warfarin for 7 months post-op due to a-fib that started while in the hospital.
